Mathmatik patterns for Muzik
    #1563902 - 05/20/03 09:42 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Blastrid reminded me of something I wanted to do with my music-

A beat that fits a pattern!

Something like this: Layered beats that have erratic intervals, but still have a pattern to them. Then maybe the end result (end of track) backwards (division) and placed over the track.

One may be 3 x 1.2, x 1.2, x 1.2 etc.
Another 5 x 2.4, x 2.4, x 2.4 etc.
Another 2 x 5.7, x 5.7, x 5.7 etc.

This is an experiment that could kick-ass! It also might sound like shit thow.

Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

There aren't 32 ways to find out! Try it out, I think it's worth it.

Good luck!

there's lots of # patterns you could use, namely the fibonnaci sequence, or something to do with the Pythagoras equation, a2 + b2 = c2

Or just general ratios.

I've thought about this a lot too, and I'm convinced it is a technique used by Tool. For melody lines, i've brainstormed making a geometrical diagram plotting pitch against time. or the ratio between the scale step and the interval of something else....

Music is Math!

Have you listened to Meshuggah? The timing is very awkward and bizarre, and supposendly they're mathmatical fanatics. I'm not entirely sure about if they use mathmatical patterns in their music, but that kind of offbeat, awkward timing (think of the song Lateralus, the drums are chugging along in different times to the guitar) can create an interesting effect.
Give it a shot. No harm in trying

I saw them at a Tool concert. I liked their drums......and that's about all I liked.

yeah, i saw em at tool also. Didn't care for them, it was impossible to follow anything, but obv that's their thing. hehe it was funny, everyone had long hair except the lead singer, who was bald, and everyone (like 6 people) were headbanging... funny to watch this bald guy headbang with guys with long hair.

I spent their set waiting for tool. just like Tomahawk, only they made my ears hurt

I too saw Tomahawk, and Meshuggah at Tool shows.
Meshuggah wasnt too bad, like Blastrid said, it was hard to follow...
Real fuckin loud, lots of distortion, and kindof annoying.

Ive never listened to either oftheir studio albums, but based on their live performances, I dont think anyone can blame me.

Tomohawk was real annoying imo. Those ear-piercing sounds hurt my head. :frown:

Maybe you could rekomend a few of his better tracks?

i agree. along with u-ziq, hard to listen to.
Although, are there specific songs that utilize certain mathematical properties?

please elaborate on your recommendation

Time signatures are based on patterns and odd/even numbers.

Drum and bass is based strictly on time signatures.

Squarepusher takes the theory of drum'n'bass to the limits, but yet, he still stays in theory.

Buy 'Go Plastic.'
