Questions for first time grow with pics
    #15637733 - 01/08/12 11:53 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I want to thank everyone here I have been interested in mycology for quite some time now and this vast collection of knowledge here has sparked an even greater interest and finally gave me the drive to begin.

For my first time, I opted for the madbag for ease of use and the joy of learning the basic steps and it is coming along very nicely. The filter patch smells greatly of fresh mushrooms and can't wait to enjoy the fruits of my labor. While waiting for full colonization I purchased the lets grow mushroom DVD set to advance my knowledge and further my skills. I am almost in the process of preparing my brf substrate and and sterilizing as shown in the video.

Before I go any further I had a question regarding jars/brf cakes/applying a casing layer.

The only jars I have available are 1 pint regular mouthed canning jars(wife makes lots of jams for the holidays) all local places to get them either don't carry them or are out of stock of the wide mouthed 1/2 pint jars. My question is would I be able to use these(I'm not trying to cut corners or be cheap)and break the colonized substrate up and turn it into a bulk substrate and apply a casing layer as they show in the casing layer preparation video, or would it be better to break the cakes and spawn to a bulk substrate then apply the casing layer, or finally one last Idea wait for stock of 1/2 pint jars and just do cakes in the shotgun terrarium(I was hoping to us the shotgun terrarium for all fruiting).

I am very new so I would like to apologize ahead of time if my terminology isn't quite correct. I am looking for advice on viable alternative pertaining to my current jar situation or waiting and doing as instructed in the video and other brf teks posted here.

Thank you in advance.

OK first of all casing is not necessary!!

Some peps swear by it but honestly the O.G's say it doesnt matter for cubes...

As for breaking up the BRF inside the jar, its not recommended broski.

I would say (if your gonna inoc. to bulk anyway) to use rye grain (rye barry) its some of the most nutritious spawn you can use!

let me know if you have any questions

Good on ya man!

A couple times I have had narrow mouth jars (old jelly jars and whatnot) and i just broke up the cake and spawned it to something else.  I mix and match different TEKS all the time.  I  wouldn't wanna break up my wives mason jars, so just go for it if you can't get the regular ones now.  Think of it as a test run till you get the regular mouth jars.

The brown rice and verm is cheap so why not go for it?

Awesome guys thank you for the replies. I might just save myself the trouble and purchase 1/2 pints online. Is there a high chance of breakage during shipping? Also I'm located in the us is there a cheap reliable place people have gotten these from. When browsing I saw them for near 20 bucks when the same brand in stores is around 10. I'm trying to make the best economical decision regarding this matter and am wondering is there a brand better than another? I do apologize if I'm overloading you guys with questions I want to go about it correctly.

for those who say casing isnt necessary for brf cakes i partially agree with you.

There have been alot of mixed results with the vast ammount of pf style grows in the IRC that i take active part in.

Some people dont case and they get pins, but sometimes you dont. Normally id say 99% of the people who case their brf+verm will get pins.

there have been 3 cases for example where a person wasnt able to get pins on their cake. they had their cake in a FC for over 2 weeks with no signs, after 5 days of casing they get pins and success.

Could be the size of the individual vermiculite flakes, not sure..

dont be lazy, use a casing.

I might Asking a dumb question as its getting quite confused on the subject in the case of brf cakes is casing considered the dunk and roll technique? Is casing also considered breaking up the mycelium and putting into a larger growing box waiting for the mycelium to reform and then topping with a peatmoss/verm/lime/gypsum casing layer on top?

casing is a layer on the mycelium/substrate that allows for a micro-level environment.

Microscopic humidity is contained within the casing layer and basically adds a new environmental system on a micro level.

The point for dunking is to hydrate the cakes, it will absorb water thats required for your mushrooms. remember with cubes its approx 90% water to 10% material in the fruits.

rolling is just a method for applying the casing layer.

hope this helps.
good luck

Awesome got it. I think I'll stick to the brf tek in the let's grow mushrooms video and branch out further after I have my first successful cultivation other than a madbag. Thank you guys for all the replies.

If your doing cakes then just dunk and roll. That tek is as good as cakes get.

The failure rate is much higher with these jars.  The brf packs too tight from gravity, making the bottom hard to colonize because air can't reach it.

Find some 1/2 pint wide-mouth jars as shown in the video for best success.  Ask the manager at your local grocery or hardware store to order a couple of cases for you.  You can also order them from Amazon, if you don't mind paying for shipping.

With brf/pf cakes, the 'roll' is the casing layer.

Ok little bit of an update. I found some jars finally. Got two cases for 6 bucks can't complain. I do have a question, would it be ok to make a bunch of jars in advance and store them or should I make them as they are needed. If the micropore tape is still on with foil covering it will this keep it contamination free?

Probably better to make as needed unless you are intending to use within a day or 2. Might lose moisture content, possibly have contams(thought that would most likely be visible).

Edit: I'm assuming here you mean make up some jars with substrate, sterilize and store until you intend to inoculate.

You got 2 12 packs of 1/2 pint wide mouths for 6 bucks? Where can I find that kind of deal? I haven't been able to find any wide mouths where I live so I use regular. RR hit the nail on the head about the bottoms packing and trouble colonizing.

I received mine from a CL ad they were new in box too.

I have a question regarding temp/humidity meters is it ok to use a digital one in a fruiting chamber or is a standard one better. For sanitization of this item should I just wipe down with rubbing alcohol or spray with lysol.

Everyone says the digitals are crap. I just use the liquid crystal strip thermometer and don't use a humidity gauge. If you use 4 inches of wet perlite and mist every now and then, you won't have to worry about humidity.

I was wondering how colonized this bag is I was hoping to get an opinion because Im not 100% it was shaken about 5 days ago and has recovered very well. This is the best pic I could get the sides are covered with what I assume to be verm. The whole bag  is very firm.

Your welcome man. Unlike some people around here I don't mind answering or giving advice on stuff, if I know the answer, even if it's been covered countless times. And don't ever think a question is stupid.

I have been moving from using jars to the Ziploc and Glad plastic ware.  It can handle Pasturizing and sterilazation temps just fine and I do not feel as bad if I have to ruin one to get what I am cooking out.  They are very cheap and you can usually find them at a family dollar or Dollar General store on sale. They come in all sizes are are generally all tapered for easy removal of stuff inside. Great for sterilizing bulk.
