This man is dangerous
    #1563681 - 05/20/03 07:59 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I don't suppose there's any way to completely protect ourselves from our own "advances" in weapons technology. The technologies of chemical and biological weapons, developed in great part by the U.S. and other Western countries, are now an only-too-well-known threat to the U.S. and everyone else. We include them in the term "Weapons of Mass Destruction", taking advantage of the whalop this term packs--more than "Weapons of Mass Casualties" might. DESTRUCTION--UCTION--uction.... We even wage wars to protect ourselves from them (ostensibly, in any case). It's the latest chapter in an arms race as old as the human race.

Now, Rumsfeld, in classic hammer-and-nail fashion, is pushing for restarting R&D for nuclear arms--with aims to develop smaller ones. How nice of us--current compact WMDs are less-than-effective. I wonder what measures will be taken in the future, when we find ourselves menaced by these same compact nucler arms, arms as mobile as a LAW rocket launcher?

Yes, let's spend a few billion dollars in this foresightful way.

yeah it seems like they would have figured out that having such neat toys that make so much noise would also attract people who were interested in the same type of toys, who would eventually get their own.....

Its like a disease, these weapons; spreading through peaceful native lands and causing trouble just like our whitey diseases did for the natives here on "our" land.

On May 25, 1953, they fired a 15 kiloton nuclear artillery shell in test XX-12 Grable. I wonder if they got some poor slob to stand there and fire that shot.

Do check out the link, guys. Great high-res photo of the exposion from that test.

I seem to recall some idiot proposing that a nuclear hand grenade could be produced. Oh, yeah, I wanna be the guy who gets to throw that thing - not.

man I would LOVE to fire a nuclear LAW. provided it was under a kiloton and I had some protective gear... that would be so much fun. can you imagine holding that kind of power in your hands?

You do know that LAW stands for Light Anti-tank Weapon don't you?

the range isn't that far, a few hundred meters at best. I've shot one before, you'd die.

I know what a LAW is and it has an effective range of a few hundred meters but it could go farther if you just aim a little higher  and I think you might be able to survive if it was a low yield device, 1 kiloton = 2,000,000 pounds of TNT with little or no shrapnel, and a relatively small explosion. the real danger is radiation so you would need a lot of protection, and you could avoid the shockwave by ducking behind a rock or something...  if I die oh well, I just think it would be a pretty damn entertaining way to go.

I'll admit it is a pretty American thing. And I dont understand myself...But honestly, I love to shoot. I dont get to much anymore, since I'm in the city now.

But ever since I was a kid, me and my dad always shot clays and targets...I dont like to hunt much, just 'cause I'm a softie. But whats with Canadians and hating guns? ITs a fun pasttime....I mean...Better than like, cricket. Isnt that what you Canadians play? Cricket?

Thats england...we play lacrosse...er, well we're supposed to anyway...

I shot guns at clays and targets when i was young in manitoba at my gandparents farm.  Shot pellet gun, a 22, shot gun, crossbow, handgun....i enjoy shooting guns as much as i do a slingshot or bow and arrow, less actually.
I would like to hunt with a bow.  I dont know what it is about guns...they don't feel right.

I said "arms as mobile as a LAW."

(Which may or may not also be an exaggeration.) I have no idea where "further studies" into small nuclear weapons would lead. And I'd rather we never find out!

Besides, there is a certain class of "opposition" in the world who have shown less concern over their own wellbeing....

If you squint at that picture, you can kind of make out a dude running in the foreground.  Running faster than he's ever run before.

nuclear research could lead to more promising alternative energy devices, why nuclear bombs work with two rotating magnetic fields, alternative energy Emf devices would work with only one...
