First PF Tek grow + pictures

Hey everyone! I just started my first grow last week and I thought I’d start a grow log. I'd also like to thank everyone on this site. I've read tons of threads and teks and I've learned so much about mycology.
I ordered a P. Cubensis B+ spore syringe from one of the sponsors on this website and inoculated seven jars on 12/30/11 following RR’s video as best I could. My recipe was a bit different as I used ground up brown rice instead of brown rice flour, and I used a crock pot to sterilize. I also did not have a glove box, so I took a shower then sprayed tons of Lysol and wore a mask while inoculating them.
For the first few days I saw no growth and began to worry that I had inoculated when they were too hot and it had killed the spores, but then on Friday (1/6/12) I noticed myc growth on some of my jars. I’m really surprised at how fast they took off once I was able to see the myc and today (1/8/12) the spots are almost three times the size they were on Friday! All seven jars are now showing some sign of growth and I do not see anything that looks like contam. I’ve been storing the jars in a box and wiping the jars and box down with antibacterial wipes every day to minimize chances of contamination. I’ve also been putting a heating pad under the box now and then (on the lowest setting) to keep the box a little bit warm.
On Friday I made a honey water LC with 1cc of spore solution. As of today I can see small white string-like particles in the jar. In a week or so I might try inoculating some outdoor substrate just for the hell of it.
Today I inoculated two more jars with the last two ccs of my spore solution. I changed my recipe a little bit; ground up the vermiculite and brown rice in a blender. I also added one cc out of my LC to one of the jars to see if it would make a difference.

This is my first grow I used 16oz drinking glasses, because of price and availability, I inoculated on January 3rd with the Creeper strain here are the pictures so far and the last few pictures are of the storage area , the storage area temperature and the heat source for the storage area please let me know what you think, I think they should be a little further along, but I know that patience is the most important part of mycology and I working on it....

I'm new to mushroom growing so I don't know that much yet, although that looks fine to me. Patience is definitely the key to growing You might want to turn the temp down a little bit since 80 degrees might cause some contam to develop. Mine are growing quite fast at around 70 degrees. I didn't notice any growth at all for the first few days, but when I did it started growing really fast.. so it's only a matter of time. I'd say a few more days. Is there any lid on those glasses besides the foil? I'd like to know how this grow ends up, and possibly try using glasses like those myself. Good luck!

dual layered foil, i have since bought filter discs that will make good lids but i don't want to mess with these, i actually bought some really nice jars from specialty bottle company, but I couldn't wait for them to get here so I just did it with glasses , the heat fluctuates between 75 and 80 but the tub is kept pretty clean and i spray disinfectant when i open it to check on the jars, so I don't think i will have a contamination problem at the higher temp, from the hundreds of pages and guides i have read, the optimum temp is 86 but because of the heat the jars themselves produce to keep the ambient temp around 80 - 82 , and that also sets the scene for fruiting -10 of the incubation temp.. so IC-80/82 = 86 and the FC at 74-78 that is the plan, I do see these other pics were the VERM is much more coarse then mine, the bag of verm i have is very fine, almost like sand, and I am a little confused about that if anyone could clear up the pros and cons of the difference... I will be using a shotgun terrarium exactly like the RR videos , a question i had about that is, since they have a hole every 2-4 inches throughout the entire storage bin, how do you keep the Perlite from coming out the holes on the bottoms and the bottom of the sides, should I put micro-pore tape over those holes? if so do i put it on the inside of the bin or the outside or both? i know i need the holes on the bottom for CO2 exchange, and micro-pore tape would allow the gas exchange... thanks for the help guys (and gals)

I don't think there is a difference for what type of verm you use, the bag I bought is really coarse and the myc seems to have no problem colonizing it. For my second set of jars I ground it up more to see if it'd make a difference so I'll know in a few days For the co2 exchange, I would think just add the holes after you add in your perlite and wet it. Just add them maybe a half inch from the top of the perlite. This -should- allow most if not all of the co2 to escape.

The grade of verm you use plays a big part. Coarse verm is not recommended because it holds less water. Not to say it won't work but, you should shoot for a medium grade.

Take a look at EvilMushroom's take on the PF Tek. A lot of PF guides that you read have dated information, but this is current and can answer all the whats and whys of BRF cakes.

I think the fine to medium grade vermiculite is the best for PF-TEK colonization

reading evil mushroom's guide he seems pretty adamant about using 0.5 pint jars which would be about 8oz , the jars i have ordered are here Recently Ordered Jars I know that most people just go with what they feel is right, but I am asking is how open to interpretation this detail is, as in the alteration of jar size and its relative alteration of the timeline, so if the timeline is 7-14 days for 8oz jars, and my jars are 0.75x that size should I be multiplying the timeline by 0.75x so it would be 5.25-10.5 days ....or stay the same.... also what about the jars i have growing now, they are 1 pint... so would the time be 14-28 days from inoculation to definitive signs of growth?
Questions On Vermiculite I am including pictures of the bag, and its contents. when I purchased this bag, I was at the store to by Per-lite because when I called they said they did not have Vermiculite but they did have Per-lite , when I got there I paid $15 for this bag, then when I got home and opened started inspecting it, I realized that is was Vermiculite, but it is very fine almost a powder, And the images of Vermiculite in Evil Mushrooms Guide look almost like pellets or tiny chunks/chips. Should I use this Vermiculite for PF Cakes Or get a new bag of the chip like stuff? If so what can I use this Vermiculite for since its such a large bag it would be a waste to not use it... maybe mix it with casing soil when I move on to a method that I would use casing soil? thanks for the help and info these forums are great

if its verm it should be fine for most applications where verm is called for.
finer verm tends to settle more in the jars causing slower colonization. buuut in the end it will work out fine for ya.
could you take a pic of the accuall verm! id like to see how fine it is.

@ haunse; those jars would be alright, but the problem with them is they have a shoulder on the rim, where the lid screws on, so it's gonna be hard to get the cakes out of them. They should colonize a little faster than the 1/2 pints because they are smaller. I have seen everything from a shot-glass to a gallon jug used for pf tek, so, I'm not here to disprove evilmushroom 666, but you can use any jar you want. The bigger they are, the longer it takes to colonize That verm will be fine, I've used the fine stuff plenty of times. You start getting into trouble when you use the really chunky stuff, but fine stuff is fine @ OP One thing I'll suggest; On these pf cakes, if the vermiculite layer on top shifts, you're screwed, so try to keep them upright at all times and don't shake jostle invert or otherwise screw with them excessively

I'm not an expert but, from what I have read, half pints are traditionally used because they will colonize faster (leaving less time for contams to take hold) and provide a "worthwhile" yield (as opposed to 1/4 pints which are a tad small). You can use pints, quarts, cups, or anything similar. It's just short, stubby half pints are tried and true.
As I said, this is just my understanding.

? what ?
like any species?
you need a spore syringe for the pf tek!
cubes work great with cakes, so do some types of oysters.
if you add supplements to your cakes (like hard wood or poo) you can grow pretty much anything you like with a pf style cake
