4 x (PR, EQ, TC) newbie grow log ** Completed 7/2 **

My friend decided to try his luck at this cultivation stuff and innoculated twelve half-pint jars last night.  Four each of puerto rican, ecuador, and treasure coast.  He used about 1CC in each PF jar then placed them in the incubator set at 83/84 F.  He?ll try to send pictures when things get interesting.  Until then, he?ll also try not to peek every day.... :tongue:.  Any tips from the experts?

* Updated 5/21: Here are two pics of the incubator.  The tubs cost him like 1.60, but were a see-through blue color so he had to wrap foil around the outer one.  A black sheet is draped over them just in case.  It stays at a steady 84F, and can fit 24 1/2-pint jars.

 

* Updated 5/23: My friend reports that the majority of jars have begun colonization, with the TC and PRs taking the lead.  Some growth spots are larger than quarters, and some areas that were injected have nothing.  Seems normal from what I've read.  No signs of contams.

* Updated 5/27: Reports have come in saying that there is serious rhizomorphic growth in all 12 jars and no signs of contams.  "Dew drops" are forming in between the mycelium and the jars, but from what I've read this is normal.  A quick guesstimate says at least 15-25% colonization in all jars.

* Updated 5/30: Tape removed and jars flipped to help with airflow.  TCs seem to be doing the best out of the group.

My friend just let me know that he peeked at one of the treasure coast jars and saw a very thin layer of 'action' near one of the innoculation holes. Is this possible? It's only been 36 hours. Maybe it's just wishful thinking...

not really. After 2 weeks get suspicious if mycelium isnt growing or stalled.

OK so the time is coming to make a decision on whether to birth or case the cakes.  Any suggestions?  My friend is more interested in doing casings, but since he's new this could prove difficult.  Maybe some sort of mix?  Two cakes and one small casing for each type?  :confused:

My friend's buddy, on his first project did half and half. This was to harvest sooner with the cakes and try his luck on casing.

The cakes went well, but it appears the casings might have flies. Only one fly was spotted when the casing was out in the open for 5 minutes, and so far no more (please please).

The cake harvests was large (will weigh after drying is complete), so things worked out in at least one way!

He's got six quart jars almost full of WBS that he could use to do casings with, so he'll probably just dump the jars into a terrarium. I assume jar-dunk and cold shock for 24h then introduce light will start the pinning?

Also, the jars that look nearly completed have now covered all the surface with mycelium. This weekend would mark the 4-5th day to allow full-colonization of the interior, would it hurt to hold off on birthing them until Sunday possibly Monday night?

I'm going to complete this grow log. Friend reports flushes still coming but I don't have time to catalog them anymore. Between this and his other grow (on WBS), 71 dried grams have been harvested...should last him a while!

is your incubator just the two containers or is it the one with the water and aquarium heater in the bottom one and the jars in the top one?

it had an aquarium heater in the bottom along with water and h2o2 mix, and yes the jars were placed in the top one with the lid and blanket covering them up

Today on a walk with the dog I passed by the area where the four PR cakes were dumped and mixed into a pile of horse poop. After about a month nothing happened, but today there were a few mini-shrooms popping up. Check em out

Oh sorry whole9, these are wild, but only because some cakes were dumped there.  I should have said grown outdoors with serious neglect :smile:

See that shroom up top behind the leaf?  It completely eluded me, I think I was too excited about todays find :wink:
