Mini DV or Digital 8?
    #1561798 - 05/19/03 10:19 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I am in the market for a nice video camera and I have a few in mind, one is a really nice sony one at best buy that is a digital 8, it is about $700, the other one they don't even sell at electronics stores, it is a sony DCR-VX2000 mini DV (pictured below) which is about $2500. My question is (for those that know about cams) what is better quality digital 8, or Mini DV? I would assume Mini DV, because the cams are more expensive genrally, but someone told me digital 8 is better once...what do you think?

Mini DV because the picture quality is crisp and clear!

Dude you can get a miniature miniDV recorder that takes awesome video for much less, more like $600-$800. And since its small you'll be more likely to have it on you when you want it.

I'm glad someone has brought this up.

I'm in the market for the same thing.  I'd like a nice miniDV that produces a GREAT picture.  But I don't want to spend a lot of moola.

If anyone can provide some brand/model names or links, that would be nice

That cam I posted is a good mid-range camera, not pro, but better than the stuff you can get at best buy. You can find it for under $2000.

There is no real difference in formats DV & Digital8. Some say that the tape quality is better with DV but the digital data on them is stored in the same way. The difference in price is because of other camera elements. VX-2000 has very good lens, 3 CCD-s & optical image stabilizer - that's what makes it expensive. I have a previous version - Sony VX-1000 and it rocks!

Some famous full feature movies were shot with these cameras like "Dancer in the dark", "Festen" & "Idiots".

ok.... See i'm what is known as a perfesional camera guy. I get payed to work with and use cameras. I also went to school for digital film making. I've used all kinds of digital cameras and HD cameras too... I've used alot of real cameras too ( real cameras are cameras that use film. ) i mean miniDV is allright you are going to want something with a nice optical zoom on it and no digital zoom an image stabalizer is a very good idea too... also it really depeneds what you plan on useing the camera for? home video type stuff? then just get one of those little 600 - 800 buck minidv cameras. Just make sure it has firewire out so you can hook it up to your computer. digital 8 is crap just don't even bother with it. It isn't a very popular format.
