Coffee Filter Question

AFOAF has 7 jars in an incubator. On top of the jars he has coffee filters cut to cover the top of the jars and cover his holes. From what i have read this is unnessecary because the top of the incubator is enclosed and there is clean air exchange in there.
Question: Would removing the coffee filters increase colonization of the jars?

coffee filters are a good additional barrier to help filter out the larger nasties.
removing them won't make much difference as air transfers easily through them.
this one dude I know puts 2-3 coffee filters rubber banded over all his quarts, which already have a small tyvek filter built into the lids.
this serves two purposes:
1. redundant filtration for larger particles 2. creates a good temporary surface to write on (noting strain, innoc date, transfer date and the like)
bottom line, the lid on your incubator won't keep dirties out when you open it up, and if dirties do get in, there isn't any sort of clean air exchange in your incubator unless you've fitted it with a fan and additional filter...so, again, some extra filtration for your jars couldn't hurt.

i assume you are referring to PF-style jars?... Coffee filters will do little to impede gas exchange and therefore should show no effect on colonisation times.

Put a layer of cardboard between layers of jars when there colonizing. This may sound stupid but it doesn?t make sense to take off the tape then stack them in a way that blocks the holes. This was when I was still leaving tape on and making all the classic mistakes. Took up to 4 weeks for jars to finish.

Big lateral filing cabinets make good incubators. A simple small ceramic heater with a themostat on the bottom level maintains the temp, just fine.
The coffee filters are just dust covers & do not impede gas exchange.

genius!
do you use that zip tie to keep the bin low in the water even when there's not enough weight in it to keep it submerged?
afoaf's temps fluctuate depending on the load in the bin (thermogenisis is also a factor, I'm sure).
