Super Simple Bulk Cakes Pictorial 2

I'm not sure if this is an actual "teknique" but this is how i do it.
Step by step.
First, you need to have colonized grain or brf cakes for spawn. BRF cakes will work fine if you don't have a pressure cooker available. I like to use Wild bird seed or rye because it's faster/easier than cakes.
When the grain or cakes are colonized, prepare some coir substrate. You could probably use any kind of bulk substrate, but i use a 90/10 coir/coffee sub.
==================================================================
basically you need: Colonized grain (or cakes) and pasteurized bulk substrate. This is a half pint jar of bird seed, and a jar of coir/coffee.

Then put grainspawn into a plastic tupperware container. The size depends on how big you want the cake to be.

Now add the coir

I don't use specific amounts. I just eyeball it so it is somewhere between a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of grain to coir.

Mix the grain and coir.

Cap it with a lid

I poke gas exchange holes

Micropore tape is awesome and cheap. I use it for everything even grain jars.

Let the grain or cake spawn colonize the coir.

This is 4 days later. Using a 1:1 or 1:2 spawn ratio makes colonization really fast. I think the coffee grounds help too.

Remove lid. This is why i use plastic tupperware; you might need to squeeze the container a little bit to get the cake loose.

Birth it like a pf cake

Then put it in a fruiting chamber like a regular old cake

Here are some other ones that have already started pinning. PE is the shiznit.

Update to show pe cake flush Not all of them were fully matured but i picked them all anyways to dunk for 2nd flush

fatties

~82 grams for first flush

And this is one thing i love about PE. most of the individual fruits are perfect dose size even from such a small substrate. They are sooooooo dense

^^^ But they really do tend to be more potent i like taking half gram to .7 gram doses with it (dry)
=======================
these were smaller ones (treasure coast). The containers were a different shape.

i like to do this style with coir too

i like the idea of making it taller and more individual substrates though

works for me too. I use PF cake 'dust' for mine. Cakes put thru a food processor to really grind em up. The thousands of tiny particles really colonize the coir quickly.(I usually save the grains for the big tubs.) Good write up w/pics.

Thanks. It's a very easy way to increase yield and fruit size. I like it better than just casing the grains in a tray.
Doing this would be an easy way to double or triple the amount of cakes in less than a week

Could one just mix up the grain/cake with the coir? wouldn't that increase speed?

The biggest factor for speed is probably going to be the spawn ratio. Spawn ratio is how much spawn you are using in comparison to how much substrate.
For instance, Spawning 1/2 pint cake to 1 pint of coir, the spawn ratio would be 1:2 . It will colonize quickly compared to 1:4.

Very nice Tek! I like the simplicity of it, spawning to bulk to make bigger cakes combines the best of PF-tek with the best of bulk. I'd imagine the bulk cakes get rather warm during colonization like other blocks like Spongi's PF Block Tek.

alrighty...would it mess anything if i did just take the spawn and stir it around?

Not sure what you mean. If you just take the spawn by itself and mix it around, it's going to be the same as it was before but more molestered. If you want to add bulk sub to it, it's good to mix it in with the substrate, or layer it. Basicly what you're doing is adding a lot of water content and a little bit extra nutrients. Grain spawn is packed full of nutrients , bulk substrates provide some nutrients, but they provide a LOT of water. Shrooms are 90% water, so you need it for good yields and size. A standard PF cake is technically a rez effect substrate, because its 1 part grain, 2 parts vermiculite with water. This is why it can produce good yields for such a small substrate.
If you wanted to, you could just mix your spawn with vermiculite by itself for a rez effect. I just preffer coir with coffee in it. Poo would work as well.

Right on man. I don't know how new you are to the growing process , so i apologize if the write up was difficult to understand. I tried to keep it as short and sweet as possible is there anything i can change to make it easier for new growers to understand?

My other PE cake was a freak show. It had all these weird blobs, shrooms growing from the cap up, crazy stuff.

This is one of the blobs

This one got picked earlier. It is cracker dry because i'd be scared to eat one fresh haha

I made sure the blobs bruised blue so i know they are they right kind of fungus
