 My Monitor Is F***ed Up!!!!!

I really hope someone can help me here...
I have a Gateway EV700 monitor, and for some reason the brightness on it is all fucked up. I went to the brightness option and made sure it was all the way up, and I even tried changing the colors, but nothing works. EVERYTHING on my computer appears a LOT darker than it really is, and it really sucks!
Does anyone know what the problem might be? I'm pretty sure that it hasn't always been this way. But I can't even appreciate some of the beautiful mushroom pictures on this site b/c they appear too dark on my monitor. Someone PLEASE HELP!!!

The overall brightness inside a monitor is controlled by one of the grids inside the electron tube neck assembly. There are usually two knobs on the flyback transformer... one for focus and one for brightness. You might try adjusting the internal brightness on the flyback transformer.
WARNING! The voltages are lethal. If you mess up and touch the wrong thing, you will electrocute yourself and die. Even if the monitor is unplugged there are still lethal voltages present inside. You must use a CRT discharge tool before mucking around in there. If you don't know what you are doing, leave it alone. A new monitor is a lot cheaper than a casket.

LOL... Since I have no clue what a flyback transformer or CRT discharge tool are; I think I will just leave it alone for right now. It's really making me mad, though, that images appear so crappy and dark on my computer. You think it must be something internal like that?? Not just some setting that got messed up somehow?
Man, this sucks...
How much would a new monitor cost me? Maybe I will get one of those cool flat-screen ones. Thanks for the reply,

Are you sure it is the monitor and not the graphics card? Try your monitor on somebody else's computer to be sure before you buy a new one.

Good idea... I will try it on one of my dad's computers before I go out and by a new one. Thanks for your advice, Seuss!

Im pretty sure its the monitor i had the same problem with my Eizo 21" and i had it replaced. The support guy said it was broken for sure.

thats happening to mine right now....the red on my monitor no longer works 
its a lot duller too.
After 4 long years, its dying

chech your 'main menu' on the monitor itself,
there should be an option to 'degauss'..
try that.
also,
have u tried resetting your monitor to 'default'?

Umm, I did this about a year ago with no CRT disharge tool, just a rubber handled screwdriver.. I didn't really know what I was doing but fixed the fault just fine !
I don't want any deaths on my conscience though so I'd go for the CRT discharge tool !
