Potential Explanation For Deja Vu?
    #15603201 - 01/01/12 09:12 PM (12 years, 29 days ago)

Could it be that your brain is simply recalling the moment a split second before the current one, and it is so similar that you don't recognize it as being different?  Maybe you just feel like it is a past memory because it is using that same function in your brain, but in reality it is basically "remembering" what is currently happening.

Seems logical. I wonder if there is a way it can be proven or disproved.

One theory that was at one point pretty accepted for deja vu is that one eye might detect a visual stimuli very slightly faster than the other, which results in sort of what you're saying- experiencing something twice, more or less. This theory unfortunately didn't hold true for long, because research showed that people with one eye also experienced deja vu.

The more accepted model right now is a memory anomaly which stems from long-term and short-term memory being related and similar functions, in which the brain gets confused between the two and triggers the sense of familiarity despite the event perhaps not being familiar. It's sort of what you're saying already, just worded differently.

But ultimately anything to do with the brain is more or less all a mystery to us right now, so it's really something we can't know for sure.

Interesting thought. Not much to back it up, unfortunately.

This is a very general example of what I think deja vu is.

Say you are with your friends in a park, and someone goes "It's such a nice day out" All of a sudden, bells goes off in your head and you are overwhelmed by a feeling of deja vu. You come to your senses and say "whoah.. .Deja vu!"

Humans pick up on associations. because by picking up on numerous ques at once, we can learn to stay out of trouble quicker. If you are swimming in a pond and you see dark clouds coming in, you get out of the water before the lightning comes.

So let me get back to that example. Being in the park with friends. When you are in the park, your mind is taking in millions of signals at once- You hear the birds chirping, the clouds are nice and fluffy white, kids are playing on the swings, you can smell the fresh summer air.. when suddenly says "it's such a nice day out"!

I think our minds are temporarily getting a present and past memories mixed up because of MANY similarities between the moments. When you think back to my example... You could have experienced a similar moment many times! because when you go to a park with your friends, its usually a nice day out, the air is usually fresh, there are usually kids playing on the swing set, and someone always says "It's such a nice day out!"

Because of ALL The similarities, our brains go a little haywire.. because how could the past be the present?

Mind bottling!

Most of my deja vu moments i can precisely remember being in one of my dreams. One time I had one of these deja visions but didnt have the deja vu for about 5-6 months, but as soon as it played out in real life it took me back to that dream/vision. So I would have to say your theorys incorrect but im no genius

That sort of brings me to something else I was just thinking about.  How do we know that when we experience a deja vu moment like that our brain doesn't sometimes CREATE a memory for you to reference?  Couldn't you completely remember having that dream but it never actually happened?

This is exactly what happens to me, I remember a few seconds of a dream and it can be from ages ago but it brings me back. When I read the begining of this thread I thought it was just me

Also happens to me. Its not always exact or for a very long period but I definitely remember it. Alot of people believe deja vu is a psychic ability not possessed by everyone. I hope there's a stitch of truth to that.

I would actually agree with you in part. Considering psychic abilities, deja vu would definitely be considered one. Though, because I think it's a fairly common psychic ability, it is no longer known as taboo and has become something of a medical anomoly.

I once heard something about deja vu being caused by a switch up of left/right brain functioning. One side of your brain actually perceives the entire situation, before the right does, and so it feels as if you've experienced it more than one time.

Deja vu, in my opinion is one of the cooler experiences our developing brains give us, so try to enjoy it if you have it. It is usually sparse and quick.
