Atheism and Cosmicism (H.P. Lovecraft)
    #15594113 - 12/30/11 09:09 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Lovecraft fansite:

"Cosmicism is an idea that the universe is far too large and complex to adhere to scientific or rational modes of thought and that humanity—indeed the Earth itself—is insignificant in the grand scale of things. Humanity's view of reality is tiny and fragmented due to the fact that the human mind can only comprehend so much before going mad. Beings that can maintain any level of comprehension of, much less exert control over the universe, therefore, are referred to as "gods"—for only a god could have such power."

Cosmicism is, of course, the brainchild of H.P. Lovecraft, himself a staunch atheist. Ironically, under his philosophy, polytheism seems like a legitimate theistic stance. Norse mythology in particular comes to mind, as many contend that the Norse gods are in fact extraterrestrial organisms.

Wiki:

"Lovecraft believed in a meaningless, mechanical, and uncaring universe that human beings, with their naturally limited faculties, could never fully understand. His viewpoint made no allowance for religious beliefs which could not be supported scientifically."

What confuses me here is that Lovecraft's Cosmicism simultaneously insists that "the universe is far too large and complex to adhere to scientific or rational modes of thought," i.e., the universe is something "human beings, with their naturally limited faculties, could never fully understand," and also that "His viewpoint made no allowance for religious beliefs which could not be supported scientifically." How is this in any way congruous? We indubitably will never truly understand this place, but by Jove you better not believe in something we can't understand with science. ???

Further, if full understanding of the universe is legitimately impossible, what's the harm in putting one's faith in a Creator God, who even the soundest atheist must admit is a rational (though yet unproven) explanation for why the world is?

sometimes i think it's helpful to think at different scopes. at the universal scope this guy may have thought all knowledge is illusory but at the social scope science is a legitimate form of knowledge while revaluation is illegitimate. just depends on what scope your inquiry takes.
