Black on caps overnight
    #1559858 - 05/19/03 01:28 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

My foaf woke up and checked out his little casing which pinned about 5 days ago, and there was a dark black cap on 1 of them and 2 were starting to turn black. Is this a contam or are they just aborts. The largest mush is about 2 days till it breaks the veil. So he isn't too sure if it is an abort or not? This also is happening to a mush that is about 4-5 cm's tall and not too close to breaking the veil. The strain is KS of that helps. Thanks for any replies

They could possibly be abhorts. If they turn black (stem and all) then immediately remove the mushroom and discard. They can function as ports for contaminant entry into your cake/casing if not removed.

Do you use alcohol, Lysol, or peroxide?

I have the same things, some of the caps turned a darker brown that before, not quite black but dark brown, is this an abort? there are 3 of them and there all about 5 cm tall, the stem still seems to be growing but the cap dosnt look like it will pop, should I pull these or just let them grow?, Also I have been monitoring my casing for a few days now because after the initial harvest, it bruised quite a bit, and after a week and a half now it has mostly gone away except for a few patches that dont seem to want to go away, but are DEFINETLY not growing over on the mycelium, I also noticed it had the very faintest smell of smelly feet yesterday but I fanned it and it dosnt seem to smell like that anymore, and it could just be my imagination since I read somewhere contamintation can smell like stinky feet. So what do you guys think, Am I still good to go, or does it sound like it may be starting to get contaminated? Thanks

sounds like aborts. I normally wait until the rest of the flush is ready to pick aborts.
