The Better Substrate
    #1559514 - 05/19/03 09:19 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

a friend of mine... was curious.
brf works great and all, but it's time to move on.
my friend heard from a friend of a friend that rye works great.
my friend was considering using rye as the substrate and then later case it with peat moss or coir. now would this be good enough, or should he consider something else? or perhaps when he is laying out the substrate into the pan, prehaps mix in moo poo to add nutrients? would that work and then case it?
he has heard that straw and moo poo work great. but would the rye + moo poo + casing work just as good 2?

shaman

junebug was using the brf for a long time and recently switched to rye berries, he just sat the casing in his terrarium and hasnt gotten to the fruiting part yet ,but it colonizes much faster that brf, and by doing g2g transfers u can make it go farther, i beilieve that an accepted procedure around here is to colonize some grains then spawn ur poo with that and case once that whole deal is colonized, junebug hadnt tried the poo yet , but every1 seems to say its the best

yeah man, pretty much any grains are good, I am currently trying rye grains but i know millet works like a charm,
then spawn some straw/poo let that colonise & case it with coco coir.
I got some huge shrooms with the same process the biggest being 10 inces tall & weighing 77.6 grams wet

Once you try grains and poo, youll never go back to BRF.

BRF= a lot of BS. It is a good teaching aid though. Grain is the way to go.

IT takes so long to colonize that it sucks a dick. forever... unless i did it wrong. After my first batch of BRF jars i started doing grains and haven't had too much trouble with them. They are alot better.

>IT takes so long to colonize that it sucks a dick

Then you are doing something wrong.
When I prepare BRF jars they colonize in around 10 days.
