Hmm your block looks pretty nice. Your strain may be a warm weather one though, so I am not entirely sure that my strain will do as well above 70F. Your block there appears to have about .5Lbs of mushrooms? I've seen EM fairly often bring in 1Lb. per block. If improving the temperature would double BE and as a result double this profit and one sells shiitake for $10.oo/Lb., then easily in 3 or 4 harvests the fridge would pay for itself. Doubling the BE may be a stretch, maybe 25% increase in BE would be more sound to say, experiments will need to be carried out, but the investor in me is saying that this would be well worth the initial money, depending on how much the cooling apparatus costs.

I have NOT gotten the crazy, "where's the block?", results of RR. Nothing like them.
If you have the $'s for a temp control setup, then you may want to use one. I am not in a position to do this, yet.
I checked my pics and have not even taken a particularly good photo (but I have made some delicious foods...an omelet for my son and I this morning) I did find this, a straw block:

Good luck,

nice block there man! which strain is it? 75?

The Ranco stat is in the $50 range. Try RANCO ETC-111000 but it does need to be wired say with an appliance cord, I cut a short ext. cord for this. Mini fridge will depend on what size you need. from $90 to $140. Here is a thought, wine coolers have digital controls, well most do, they max at 65 f these are the thermoelectric type, no compressor. I just googled one that was $85 Again not sure what size you need.
You might also find stuff at yard sales. If I am allowed to I will post links to my forum where I can detail the coolers I have made.

Oh the most I will be able to spend is $50 on this cooling device for practical purposes. What exactly is a RANCO-STAT ?

Hey Mike,
It is a temperature sensitive electrical controller.
You can use it to force a fridge to maintain specific temperatures.
Take care,
JD

Mike I am using that stat because I have had it for years, used it for making jerky, keeping my beer at 26f in those days. There are likely others that will work. The wine cooler method was just a thought, maybe after Christmas you will find them cheaper. To stay on budget you will likely need to shop CL or garage sales. An accurate stat though will not normally be a cheap find.

Ahh I c, thanks JD and PassCom. That still seems like way too high of an expense for me... except without a temperature controlling system I will waste any money I use to try and grow these mushrooms. So I may just have to fork over the cash and get a mini-fridge/RANCO stat

@PassComm
Alright, you have me hooked to the idea of getting a wine cooler since the temperature setting can be controlled and set at 60F, which is what I am needing. Plus if this actually works it will be about as cheap as you can get for automated cooling.
Question is, how big of a wine cooler would I need to chill a SGFC with dimensions of 32'' x 19'' x 13'' with a volume of 99L? Or better yet, two of them?
