From electric guitar to violin

Has anyone made a similar jump? I've been playing guitar for 6 years or so and as of late the violin has been on my mind. I like and tend to play a melodic lead style so I think the transition, at least in terms of what I am wanting to express (technical ability is a different ball game of course), will be a nice one. But I also like throwing on distortion and getting some really heavy, dark moods, squeals, growls, etc. out of my amplifier. Am I going to, eventually, be able to reach the same depths on the violin I wonder? Any opinions are appreciated.

Good question, i'm not sure but check out this artist. He uses an electric violin through al sorts of distortions http://www.youtube.com/user/JasonYangViolin
I'm curious as well about the depths as a standard violin.

Thanks for the video, led me to a bunch of other ones.

I first played guitar and became a competent violin player. Learning new instruments isn't very hard if you already can play and instrument. Especially going from a string to a string. Violin is much like guitar except the strings are arranged in fifths rather than fourths and you use a bow, but you could just stick to pizzicato playing, but I'm sure you wanna fuck around with the bow, it's like the coolest part.
If you know how to play guitar already you can just transpose what you know from playing guitar and learn violin technique. Technique is really the only thing you gotta worry about.

Thanks!
A video I am watching right now, you may enjoy.
Do you miss, assuming your violin is acoustic, and assuming you used them as an (electric) guitar player, the effects of pedals, distortion, etc. Do you still play guitar?

I've played on a rigged up electric violin, albeit not the most quality work or hardware on the thing but, I never really liked the violin with distortion. My use of effects these days has been minimal though so my opinion is kinda bias there. So no, I don't really miss the lack of effects when playing an acoustic violin. Violins sound ridiculousness to begin with, the drone of the bow across the strings is so hypnotic, throw some harmonic minor in the equation and I'm quite satisfied.
I do still play guitar, I mainly play guitar but, I'm pretty competent on any common string instrument.

No, only the other way around.

Well, depends on how you define those depths. But it's rare that anyone becomes a very proficient violin player if they start when they're over, say, 16 or so.

Well, those are considerable differences to begin with. In addition, the distances are incomparable between the instruments, and violins have no frets. As a result, guitar players who convert to violin usually have huge issues getting intonation right: both because there are no frets, but also because finger placement needs to be _much_ more precise than with guitar.
