I guess what I mean is people should get to the point. What do you want from me? What can you offer me? How can we mutually benefit eachother? Whatcha got? Whatcha need?
Why say anything unless it's something that needs to be said for the benefit of one or more parties?
What really, is the point of shooting the shit so to say?
Get down to business already. Quit beating around the bush.

Not everyone is always out to do business. Sometimes it's fun just to meet some new people and see what's up. Maybe you'll make some new friends.

Id like to and all, but the normal day to day stuff seems frivolous to me.
That's why I drink to make friends, it makes me so I can relax and just shoot the shit.
Otherwise Im not gonna talk to you unless either I think I have/can do something you want or you have/can do something I want.
Online is different though, thats where i socialize since I dont have to play the whole empathy game or try in vain to pick up on nonverbal cues.
I may have aspergers but I dont wanna be the guy who uses it as an excuse for not acting how society expects me to.

i like small talk, most of the time anyway
Talking to strangers is one of the most interesting things i think there is to do. many times you'll come across a grumpy muscaria but learning about another person you've never met is something that i find amazing, who knows what interesting things they have to share with you while you're 'shooting the shit'

Actually that proves my point. If the course of your life is measured by grades and where you worked, then it's no life at all.

Ive had and some awesome, currently do have an amazing job. Most of these are directly reflect my experiences in life. While experience in your profession does account for some things. I think that personality and life experience counts for more.
I used to do, and to some extent still do, interviewing, hiring, and training for a couple of companies. My biggest criteria was always character, personal references, and longevity with the previous companies. Everything else can be trained/taught.
While I see your point in the OP, I think that every thing we do in life contributes to who we are. And because of this, it also contributes to what kind of work we are most apt to seek. To hear, "That will look good on a resume", can really only be interpreted as a compliment. From my point of view this can only be interpreted as, "This is something that I have done, that few others have."
Do you think that people that are working at the local gas station have climbed Everest? Donated their time to help the less fortunate? Have any leadership skills?
The list goes on and on. Its all part of what makes up YOU! Be proud of who you are, and what you have done. And when you sit in an interview, look your new boss in the eye, and tell them who you are. Dont wait for them to ask.

That's true, it can be a positive thing.
But it is best to phrase our activity in terms of life fulfillment rather than marketability.

This reminds me of a set of two resumes that I recieved one time. I had enough openings for both of them.
The the high points of each of the two resumes :
#1 - Wal-Mart, Chevron, Waiter at Local Restaurant, Cashier. No college education.
#2 - Extensive volunteer experience in various areas during high school, foreign exchange student, 1 summer spent doing beach cleanup in Tarawa. No college education, but aspiring for a degree in Psychology.
If you had to pick either of these, which would be your first choice?
Side note is that I ended up hiring and training both. Sometimes life fulfillment can be a marketable skill.

Ironically, you're still missing the point, like a few other people here have.

I think you may have missed the point I was starting to get at. I read the OP.
Quote:
If the canvas of the soul is painted with experience, then there is no right path or wrong path. Too many people quantify the value of their knowledge and experience for an employer.
In my example, both applicants did very well. Because it was an awesome and amazing opportunity to change other peoples lives. The job itself offered self fulfillment. It was just one of those rare opportunities.
I was beginning to get at the idea that you should only work at a job that is rewarding, and offered satisfaction.
I dont HAVE to go to work everyday. I GET to go to work every day. And I think everyone should have that experience. Why do people put themselves in a position that makes them do something they dont want to do every day? Never made sense to me.

It's quite the opposite, which is why I'm tired of hanging around folks who care too much about it.

Then pay it no mind man.
If you enjoy what you do, then keep doing it. But everything you do in life should "look good on your resume". I think its a direct reflection of our human condition. We should all strive to be the best we can be. To experience all that we can, and push to excel in whatever interests us.
Why would anyone settle for being mediocre? I cant accept that anyone would strive to be less than the best they could be.

then I am in a similar situation, the "prodigal" son, successful in most ways, following in the footsteps of my dad.
My brother is a full-blown hippie with a college degree who is homeless by choice.
It pisses me off to no end that my dad judges us differently because of what makes us happy.
again, not identical situation but I think I can relate to being sick of being judged as successful by bullshit standards.
