Increase colonization speed

If speed is of the essence and you are using pint-sized or larger jars, here is a handy tip to try:

Get some 1/2" pvc pipe. (Other sizes work fine.)

Drill dozens of small holes (1/32" - 1/8") all the way down. (Smaller for millet - larger for rye or rice). Also drill holes in the end cap if you use one.

A. Cap the bottom end and push through your substrate before sterilization or

B. Leave the bottom uncapped and pack your subtrate around the open-ended pipe. (You do NOT want the pipe clogged with substrate or you defeat the purpose of this tek.)

(I prefer A, but is a little more costly and time-consuming).

Also try packing the bottom 1/4-1/2" of your jars with vermiculite or popcorn. This will allow additional air circulation to the bottom. For half-gallon or gallon-sized jars, multiple pipes may be used.

This will increase the air flow dramatically to the normally lagging center and bottom of your jars. Should speed colonization time up 20-50% depending on size of jar, and amount and type of substrate.

Let me know your results.

im not sure using pebbles/rocks would be a good idea cause they might explode when pressure cooking b/c of build up of water->steam pressure inside them. i just know they explode in camp fires.

Thanks for the warning. Small porous lava type stones would work OK as the moisture has already been driven out, but generic pebbles, which are mostly granite, might be subject to exploding as you suggest.

One additional note: Increasing oxygen supply to the bottom of the jar can help decrease or stunt the growth of anerobic bacteria!

Sounds like just the ticket I may have been needing, I'll try it with my next set of jars.
