Oregon Mushroom ID
    #1556395 - 05/17/03 05:12 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I've been finding a lot of these around lately. I guessing it is some kind of cortinariales, but would like to find out more specifically. This one was growing on the edge of the grass under a bush. I usually see them in fairly large clusters in mulch or woodchips. The ring doesn't always stay on mature ones, and the stipe is fibrillose and slightly hollow. The spore print is a chocolate brown.
Thanks for any help.

I can't tell from the photo - are the gills free or attached? Could you cut it in half vertically and show us what the inside looks like? If so, please take one half and scrape the inside with your knife edge to bruise the flesh and show us that also. If the gills are free, also let us know what it smells like.

If the gills are free, my first shot would be an Agaricus. If they're attached, I'd start with Stropharia.

I don't think it's a Cortinarius. The spore print color and ring are wrong for that genus.

Let us know.

Happy mushrooming!

That's a very pretty mushroom!  Unfortunately, that's the only help I can give you on identifying it!

Peace,

The gills are free and it bruises brown. It smells kind of like an oyster mushroom to me, but not nearly as strong of an odor.
The one in these pics is a bit water logged as it has been raining out.

Thanks.

The best match I can find is Agaricus californicus. This species is poisonous and causes gastric distress in many people.

Your specimen isn't exactly like those you'll find on lots of web sites, but this species is fairly variable.
