I suspect a pH problem
    #1556390 - 05/17/03 05:09 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Here goes....
Treasure Coast. Cased in 50/50+ . Using a pH meter and hydrated lime I got the pH to 7. Cased in a Ziploc disposable meat-loaf sized tray that's been wrapped with duct tape to stop growth from the side of the casing. Two inches of culture topped with an inch of 50/50+. Took a week or so longer than usual to fruit, and when it finally did they all grew from the side of the casing. There is good mycelium growth on the top of the casing just no shrooms. There are far fewer shrooms than normal and the ones that do grow are HUGE. Stem thicker than a large thumb and about 8 - 10 inches high. Huge caps. So I suspect my pH meter is fucked and I need a new one.

Anyone with any thoughts for or against my hypothesis?

Oh yeah, did a search for pH but everything with a pH in it shows up including sphagnum and ralphster.

Thanks in advance to those who can help!

look into testing your meter before you replace it, find something with specific pH levels, test solutions and the like...unless it turns out to be cheaper just replacing it... as for the side growing shrooms....possibly overlay on the top, and if the casing had pulled from the sides of the container a little it would allow light to get to it.....

so you want to know why your shrooms grew really
big, but only from the sides of the container and you
think that it's possibly because of bad pH levels?

I'm not convinced that extreme pH levels will adversely
affect growth and fructification considering some
pasteurization teks call for the addition of lime to swing
the substrate's pH up to the 10-12 region. My point
being that this substrate eventually supports fruiting
so why wouldn't your casing layer.

could it possibly be something else?

was the casing layer dryer than normal?

how about ambient humidity in your grow space?

any sign (or smell) of contams on the casing layer (cobweb)?

have you fruited in these sorts of containers before?

Thanks but it's not overlay nor is the casing pulled away from the sides.

Not exactly. When I say there were far fewer shrooms I mean between 4 - 8 per casing.

Yes but I don't know what.

No.

Same as always.

None.

Exclusively.

I'm as sure as I can be that I followed all the same techniques and used all the same brand ingredients. That's why I'm so puzzled.

Hmmmm.. I would have also said overlay. I add a little under 1 part limestone flour for 4 parts peat; I don't even have a pH meter. Could be this, though, if it were really fucked up.

The casing could be too wet or dry, or lack of air exchange....

We could probably help more if you could post a picture.
