Poisonous Mushroom
    #1556375 - 05/17/03 04:54 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

This sucker is located in the Puget Sound area, found underneath pine trees in a grassy mossy plot of land. These mushrooms tend to come up one at a time, but always come up in the same area of about 10 x 10 ft. They are fairly consistent on popping up too, one after another. After two days of rain I went to take a look at the spot, and got to test my new camera.

White spores and white gills leads me to believe its a good looking =) poisonous mushroom. If anyone could possibly id it that would be awesome. The stem also had a wet gooey sticky feel, but usually I find these at a much older age and they don not have this.

That's an Amanita, alright. Could you show us a photo of the mushroom from the side, and make sure it shows the base of the stem and volva?

At first glance it's similar to Amanita pantherina, but we should see the volva to confirm that.

Happy mushrooming!

Those photos are the right angle and all, unfortunately it looks like you broke the base off when you picked it. When identifying Amanitas we need to see the entire base of the mushroom - some of them have rooting bases that can go down several inches into the soil.

It's probably Amanita pantherina, as I suggested above, but we can't verify that for sure. Sorry.

Happy mushrooming!

Ok, thanks a ton for the info. I will watch one of these fully mature, and see if it looks like pics of mature Amanita pantherina.

Where is the volva located on the stipe usually? I thought it was that disc like flesh in the middle area of the stipe.

No it is an egg-like sac at the base of the mushroom and normally it will not breal away when you lift the mushroom from out of the ground.

Here is a picture to show one on Amanita muscaria.

and here is Amanita ocreata Peck, another posonous Amanita with the volva at the bottom of the mushroom (an egg-like sac-cup or tissue surrounding the stalk-base after the univrsal veil has ruptured.

This species is also referred to as the Destroying Angel

ooooooo ok, so the fleshy disc at the middle of the stipe on my mushroom is a reminant of its veil? That rules out amantia?

Yeah, the fleshy fleshy disk is called the veil.

When Amanitas are young they are surrounded by a fleshy sack that protects the young mushroom. As the mushroom grows, it breaks through the sack, leaving a cup like object at the base of the mushroom. This webpage explains everything much better than I can.
