Possible Weilii find

I went out once again today to find some weiliisin a nearby neiborhood (1 year old)... and I did not find anything, until I kicked something...Sure enough it was a mushroom that I kicked over.. It matched the description of the psylocibe weilii pictures on this website.. the sporeprint was dark viotlet and everything matched...The only thing that doesn't match is the fact that it doesn't bruise as blue as I thought it should.. It was a dull purple-blue color...but not very dark at all...Could this be a weilii? Or a lookalike..Are they supposed to turn obvious blue or what..Very sorry that I don't have a digital camera or anything..this is the most info I can give w/out the pictures. Thanks, Jon

Does it have a unique smell? I understand weilii have a very unique scent. Also if you aren't in Mid to North GA it's not.

Does the stem have a ring of dark stuff around it near the cap? Is the cap and stem very fibrous? Was the print dark purple or more of a black color? Does the cap have an orangeish or lighter brown "nipple" on it?
If you answered yes to most of these questions, you've probably got Psathyrella velutina... One of the most common weilii look-a-likes. They are out in full force right now, I found about 30 of them while looking for weilii, and not a single damn weilii.
If you've got a scanner, you could always scan the mushroom.

I think it is pronounced While E
The mushroom is named after Dr. Andrew Weil.
The pronunciation of his last name is tricky.
It is pronounced as if the "e" were not there.
So, his last name is pronounced "While" -And example, while i was typing on the computer -Or, while i was out at the store
Then you add the "ii" -Which is the same sound as the letter "E" --And example, I am going to Hawaii to pick shrooms.
Good luck.
Keep shroomin, GG

I used to think that his name was pronounced like "Wheel"
So i called them wheelies, sort of like how you can pop a wheely on a motorcycle.
Anyways,
Good luck.

Yes if it does not blue with in five or ten minutes, it is almost surely as Psathyrella velutina (Velvety Psathryella) I find them all the time in weilii patches, and have had friends mistake them many times. They lack the weilii scent, and the stem is often whiter more fibrous than weilii. As for pronounciation, Mj got it right on.

Wow that is good information about the Psathyrella velutina that is all I am finding. It is darker when new and gets whiter as the day goes on. I looked it up when I found it and low and behold you guys are taking about exactly what I am dealing with. I can not find any Weilii's I assume that the spring season might be over with soon, but I do not know? any thoughts.

I'm thinking that it's just getting started. This cold shock we just had might have either slowed them down or given them a jumpstart... we'll see within the next few days, eh?
