    #1555186 - 05/16/03 10:21 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

These pins sprout up, and keep comming, but dont seem to develop, a couple mm's a day....What could be the problem? What about a solution?

Their just in a quart jar, air exchange anywhere from 4-7+ times per day, no more water, its moist and condenses. No Ph buffer was added to the peat and the gal wonders if that might have something to do with it. More and more are commin...but they just aint growin...

she's tried incubating at around 80, keeping at room temp, and putting on top of her monitor...ontop of the monitor seems to make it more humid and better growth.

monitors can get hot dood. I dunno but a friend was incubating his in a box on his monitor, and he had to take them off every so often cause it got too hot.  I dont know about yours though, mine was a ghetto monitor   Can you get a temp reading?

No temp reading, she's tried leaving it in her incubator at probably around 75, and cutting back on air exchanges to see if it makes a difference. She'll check later today..

More and more pins keep comming, nearly the entire surface is covered, but hardly any development. They are fattening very slightly and still going a couple mm's a day. The casing layer was looking dry so she added about 8 cc's of sterile water today. Fanning regularily.....She just doesnt understand, She should have a nice patch comming out!

Anyone please help with pinning. [Re: SBTlauien]
    #1556836 - 05/17/03 08:36 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Na, their not fat asses at all, just gaining a very small amount of weight, the biggest would be a 1/4" round at most. Their not water logged, too hot, too cold, too much or too little air, it seems hopeless trying to get them to develop. She just relayed to me that she counted 49 pins, all between 1" and 1/2" mostly closer to the 1/2", their are probably at least another 30 primordia bumps which will be pins like the others in about 2 days...thats alot of pins for a layer thats maybe 3" squared surface area....Rhizo's are even thriving!

STFU, flamer.

as for pins that won't develop...

you never want to cut back on air, air is k3y.

if anything, I'd imagine that co2 has built up in
your jars.

when you say you give them 4-7 air exchanges
a day, how exactly are you doing it?

with quarts like that, the co2 can just pool at the
top of the substrate surface level as it is heavier
than oxygen.

when you are fanning (or whatever you do), you need
to be sure that you do a good job of stirring the air
up really well inside the body of the jar to flush out
the old stale co2 and introduce nice fresh o2.

available moisture and fresh oxygen are the two
biggest determinates of the success of a pinset,
humidity trailing close behind.

Hey AFOAF, thanks, i wasnt sure about the air....i figured she'd had no other options, so she tried not fanning...she also tried seran wrap with holes poked in it. Do you think a loose tinfoil lid would be better than airtight tinfoil?

As for the fanning, she uses a styrofoam meat plate and it provides great and total air exchange she's sure, she would leave the lid off for maybe 3 minutes at a time.

Is too high of acidity a common cause of slowing growth?

I really don't think casing pH is the issue...

well, one more theory down the drain. How frustrating. She's thinking after maybe another week she might just pick all the pins off and crumble overtop of her outdoor beds, or maybe try a visions laundry basket tek with it. :frown: She had high hopes after seeing sinoptik's quart jar casings at nansnook.

haha, yeah, thats what she's thinking. She gave me...what was 4 wet grams of similar pins, to me, to dry, i made a tea...and i tripped surprisingly hard for what would be like.... .4g. Ill still give em a week to fatten up.
