Epsom Salt Tek! Drying anyone can afford!

Desiccant isn't the easiest thing to find sometimes and sometimes when you do find it, ITS EXPENSIVE (depending on where you get it). I have found silica gel bulk of 4 lbs for $30 + $10 shipping!

So I searched around and discovered something interesting. Epsom salt, which can be bought at any drug store for a couple dollars, is a cheap alternative desiccant to get those shroomies :mushroom2: the envied CRACKER DRY!

Regular Epsom salt will do nothing as a desiccant, however if we bake it at around 400 - 450 F for about 2 hours which turns Epsom salt (MgSO4ยท7H2O) into Magnesium Sulfate(MgSO4) it becomes a powerful desiccant. The cooking process removes the 7H20 from the compound making the salt search for H20 in the air to re hydrate itself.

Ingredients:
Any Epsom Salt

Steps:
1. Get a pan that you don't mind scratching OR line the pan with aluminum foil.
2. Preheat oven to 400-450 F. (450 if you use more then a centimeter)
3. Fill pan with about a centimeter of Epsom salt.
4. Put pan in oven and cook for 2 hours. (You can mix it once after its been in for a half hour, then leave it)
5. Now speed is important here, The Epsom salt will become a solid cake that looks completely white. Remove the pan and right away break up the salt with a knife or hammer etc, and put in an airtight jar/container RIGHT AWAY!

DO NOT LET IT COOL FIRST!! The faster you get it in the airtight container, the stronger it will be. However it doesn't re-hydrate in 5 minutes, so you don't have to race to finish, but do it as fast as possible without straining yourself;).

Once its in the container shake it up to break up the pieces as much as you can.

Then get a Tupperware container fill the bottom with some salt (about an ince or a little less) then put a paper towel down on top to cover it all. I then put my shrooms in a coffee filter and set that on top of the paper towel. Put the lid on and leave it for about 24 hours.

:alert: STILL IN DEVELOPMENT (Will post with picture and effectiveness updates after some more trials) :alert:

Things to note:

This is an awesome organic alternative to the regular chemical desiccants.

Its also re-usable (like most desiccants), when the crystals lose their whitish color for a more clear crystal look (kinda like what it looks like out of the bag) you can re-bake it with the same steps ahead!

Update: Efficiency,

From the first trial approx 3g's of water have been removed from the shrooms in about 4-5 hours. 17g to start and 14g now. All the shrooms were heat dried for 2 hours at 100 F today before being put in the chamber.

Wow this sounds great I was thinking about how I was going to dry my mushrooms plus its cheap the salts wont affect the mushrooms at all sitting on top of this.

12 hours since last weigh in, they now weigh 10g from 14g. Therefore they have lost another 4g of water in the last 12 hours.

You should realize, though, that drying is for storage.  If you can't wait to trip, you can eat them wet.

The problem is that all of them are either almost completely cracker dry but still a bit wet, or they are just about 50% dry. So dosing is the hard part. I want a strong trip, but i dont want to overdose and mentally die for 3 hours :P.

And itll be my first trip from SWIMS home grown shrooms :laugh:

This worked out amazing. Completely dried out my shrooms even with one batch that i didnt dry to much before hand. I would suggest re-baking the epsom salt once its done drying so that it keeps the container nice and dry for storage.

Great tek! I am currently attempting this but I had a question....once the salt is removed from the oven I put it in an air tight container but its still really hot....do I wait for it too cool down in the container before adding the shrooms?

i would just shop a thrift shop for a dehydrator. cant beat a $5-$10 dehydrator.

plus if you grow bulk, you can fit soooo much in the dehydrator

I can get Damp rid loose granules for 1.25$ a lb. would you recommend Epsom salt over this or is it a "if you get it cheaper use it" thing?

Epsom salt you would compare to using Damp-Rid, not a dehydrator.  Dehydrator is the best method of drying IMO/IME.  Quickest way of drying = less oxidation = more potent.

Epsom salt will do the same thing Damp-rid or any other desiccant will do.  Except Epsom salts are rechargeable and easily obtainable, and cheaper.  Just requires more work to get it ready unlike Damp-rid or other products that are ready to go.
