Leaving cakes in jars to long.

After the jars are full colonized is there any chance the jars will contam while sitting there idle? I (think I) know that once they are fully colonized they are harder to contaminate but just checking with someone with a little more experience to make sure. Also, if these cakes go to pin inside the jar (I don't think this is very likely since they are in complete darkness) is there any of the active ingredient in the pins or do they have no real value?

From what I've heard and read, the pins would actually be just as potent (some say moreso) than fully grown mushies. They begin to lose potency just after the viel breaks because they begin to expend energy to produce spores.

Leaving your jars should be fine, but it's a good idea to birth as soon as you see pins forming because they have more room to grow! If one were to leave the pins long enough, they would simply swell to the biggest size they could get to inside the jar. In essence, they can grow inside the jars without ever being birthed, but it results in some very ugly (yet still just as potent) mushrooms.

Once the jars are fully colonized, they are fairly resistant to contamination because there is no substrate exposed for a contaminant endospore to germinate on. Cobweb and trich both have the ability to overrun a fully colonized cake, but it is still difficult for them to do and usually doesn't happen until the cake has flushed a couple of times and is weak (and vulnerable).

Good luck!
