FC lighting and heat
    #15536380 - 12/18/11 06:24 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Sorry if this is a noobie question.  I've done some searching and I still have some questions about lighting and heat.  I want to run my FC lighting during the night to help maintain my FC temperature when it is the coldest.  I can keep the heat up during the night by using an incandescent light.  The problem is that the color temperature for incandescent lights is like 2700k.  If I were to use a compact florescent I can hit the 6500k range.  If I am right this is the color temperature I am trying to achieve with my lighting, but a CFL does not emit the heat that an incandescent emits so my FC temperatures will drop down to the high 50s - low 60s at night.

Can I use an incandescent to maintain the heat while using a cfl to maintain the proper color temperature or will using two lights at the same time wash out the 6500k color temp I am trying to achieve?  Is there some type of light that will be in the right temperature range and also be hot enough to raise the temperature in a small area like an incandescent will?

Ever thought about putting one of these inside your FC? Ohmatic's Heatbomb

i don't know if it would heat it up enough, as i have no experience with that, but i'd guess not.  i don't even think mushrooms benefit from anything BUT 6500k light.  i'm not totally sure though, and hey i'm sure any light is better than none.  if possible, let the FC get natural light.  also, i don't know how else to get your temps up besides getting a small heater or something. what is current temp?

Mr. Wonka, day/night temperature fluctuations are perfectly natural and many believe beneficial for mushroom growth.  Low 60's / High 50's at night is totally fine.

There's really no need to do what you're contemplating doing.  But to answer your question, fluorescent tube bulbs can generate a ton of heat, regardless of the color temperature.  But again, day/night temp fluctuations are healthy so don't concern yourself with this, stick with 6500K lighting and allow the grow area to get a little cooler at night.  You project will be fine.

(btw I'm assuming you're growing cubes)
