Sure, but does it need a lid?

Yep, put some water in there, then put something in there to elevate the jars out of the water. Steam sterilize for 90 minutes (don't let it boil dry!).

I would say yes use a lid so it holds in the heat.

You can also try using a frying pan lid that is slightly bigger. Put a damp rag around the top of the pot and set the lid on that to get a better seal. I did that for my few times and didn't run into any problems.

Yeah, that will work, but make sure you let it cool fully before removing the plate.

Should I let them cool overnight, or for a few hours?

Till you think they arent hot enough to kill your myc/spores you inoculate with.
A couple hours is fine but I let em sit in my car overnight where the temp gets down to freezing, dont want to give any contams a headstart aha

After the jars finish sterilizing, leave them in the pot where it is sterile and do not open the lid until you are ready to inoculate them. 6 hours is pretty safe, most people just let their jars cool overnight. Again, do not remove them to a different place to cool, you would be taking them away from their sterile location and letting contaminates get on the inoculation points. Early removal wouldn't doom your grow, but I'm just giving you the best advice.

Hey KxTx steaming for 90 minutes can and will work for some.

Google 'fractional sterilization' if you want a little added piece of mind.

Good luck!
