In RR's video "Lets lean agar!" he explained that 49 grams goes to 1L of water
    #15534173 - 12/18/11 09:52 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Or did I miss something?

I bought agar agar powder from a biomarket shop and Mixed 500ml of water with 25 grams of agar powder.

It didn't feel right. Everything was clumpy and fell down on the bottom.

I had to get rid of that "thing" on the bottom. Finally got clear liquid.

But on the back of that product there says I should mix 5g to 500ml!!!

I don't understand the heck what I'm doing here. I just followed RR's words on his video.

ANY COMMENTs?

I had the same thing happen to me.  Check this thread of mine out, your answers are in there.  The problem is that you bought it pre-powdered instead of grinding it up yourself.

thats not really a proper agar tec. there isnt any nutrition added to your mix.

here are some recipies that Paul Stamets has noted in his book:

malt extract, yeast agar:

1 liter of water
20g of Agar agar
20g Malt extract
2 grams yeast
1 gram peptone (optional)

Potato dextrose, yeast agar

1 liter of water
300 grams of potato water (broth from boiled potatoes)
20 grams agar agar
10 grams dextrose
2 gramns yeast
1 gram peptone(optional)

there are plenty of other tecs on this site.

i find agar powder doesnt fully dissolve in water util it has been heated so if your finding clumps in your agar, then just wait until you autoclave it and it probibly should be liquid.

If most of the agar diluted, I don't have any problems with a couple of small chunk of agar in my plates.

RR's DVD recipe for agar is very good.

How does grinding it affect the weight?
(what weighs more a pound of nails or a pound of feathers?)

Holy mommy, in his video he clearly stated that using agar agar is what he's using. And he is not grinding it anymore, just buying powdered commercial agar agar.

I bought powdered agar agar. As I can understand, instead of 24,5 grams to 500ml of water I should be using 5 grams to 500ml (on the back of the product it recommended so).

Okay now.. This powder I got is not enough and I should just dump those agar pates which are already solid and "ready to use" ?

.. so basically what You're saying is I should add 20 grams of this powder to 1L water + 0.3L potato water > total of 1.3L water.

And THEN I should add More nutrients?

Where do you get yeast and malt?

i found yeast at the grocery store, and light malt extract at my local home brew store.

it shouldnt be too hard to track down,

i believe agar agar just isnt as nutritious alone as preferably you'd want for culturing myc. im sure you can save that agar, and reheat it add the ingredients you need and then re sterilize and re pour.

i usually make a big crown royal bottle full and once i sterilize and pour it i just seal the bottle and re-sterilize when i need to use it again.

Agar should not be very nutritive... just a little bit.

Actually, no.

If you watch the full tek on DVD rather than just the sample clips, you'll see I was demonstrating with Stamets' pre-mixed agar from fungi.com and the recipe calls for 49 grams(7 tablespoons) per liter of water.  That pre-mixed agar already contains the agar-agar plus the malt, dextrose, etc., ground to a fine powder, and all you do is add water.  I was trying to make the video as easy for new growers to follow as possible, without going into the detailed procedures to make your own.

If you buy agar-agar from an oriental food store, you need to grind it to a powder, and then boil it first before adding the nutrients, and then sterilize it all together.  To this day, I have more pressing matters to spend my time on, so it's advantageous to use the pre-mixed stuff rather than going to that time and effort to make my own.

You can also get pre-mixed agar from shroomery sponsors such as Sporeworks, and possibly others.

Check carefully your bottle for contamination before you sterilize it again. After I pour my agar in plates, the neck of my bottle usualy get a little bit covered with agar.
This spill will most probably wet your filter a little bit.

If any mold spores enter your bottle in the process they will most probably grow inside your bottle puking spores all around.

i keep the lid wiped down after use, and i find i dont have any contams enter my bottle, i use it quickly in a glove box and seal it quickly.

i figure that even if bacteria or some other contaminates have entered the agar it will be destroyed apon re-sterilization.

Ok, but I'm having AGAR AGAR mix available atm. I hope this is as good and I won't have to grind anything. I'll just add malt and yeast to my agar agar powder.

I hope I understand what I'm doing now. Going to the shop quickly to start over with new materials.

malt extract, yeast agar:

1 liter of water
20g of Agar agar
20g Malt extract
2 grams yeast
1 gram peptone (optional)

.........................................................................

I got yeast in powder form, but Malt extract in liquid form.

Is it 20g of this liquid or 20mg?

Can anyone clarify? .. and liquid form is the correct thing I assume?

Malt Extract Agar (3%)(MEA)(General Microbiology)(FDA M93)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
30 g Malt extract
20 g Agar
1 L Distilled water

This medium is recommended as a general maintenance medium.

...........

I wonder what's better.. to use 30g of malt or 20g of malt, and to add yeast or not.

This recipe up there seems to be easiest and most popular.
