Panaeolus (and actually most Psilocybes) will fruit without a casing layer. You will however get better results employing one.

I'm happy that you've said this b/c I always tell people this but they always tell me casing is a waste most of the time.

Pan cyans fruit fine without a casing layer if you maintain proper moisture content. The main reason growers case copelandia is because they do much better on a thin substrate of around 1 1/2' to 2" in depth, thus they dry out faster without a casing. RR

Well SS, it was new ground for me. ;0)
This is very logical RR. Thanks for the clarification.
Take care,
JD
P.S. SS, I should have remembered that one grow. I liked how you managed to save that one large pin by casing around it. There we have it.

I'm devoting most of next year to studying the Panaeolus species. I'll use the tried and tested methods for most of the studies, but i think there will be room for a little experimentation.
