Uneven growth in PF jars
    #1552603 - 05/15/03 09:13 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

My PF jars have been colonizing since April 1st and the bottoms on them have finally completely colonized. The only thing is that the tops of the jars, because the cakes kind of shrunk, the growth is really sporadic due to the dry verm layer becoming uneven. Since they've been colonizing so long I don't think waiting is going to fix the situation. Should I birth them and then even out the tops with a sterilized knife or what?

If I was you I would wait, but if you do birth early, then you must take out all the parts of the cake that were not colonized, otherwise, your going to run into problems in the future.

If your fuzzy white friend is poking through you verm layer at the top, and the bottom is completely colonized you can birth them. Sounds like strong myc. to me they should fruit readily.

The mycelium is not supposed to colonize the dry verm layer.

If the bottoms of your jars are colonized, I'd bet a lot of money that the tops of your jars are colonized.

And yes, after the substrate is colonized and the cake is birthed, it is customary to scrape away the dry verm layer.

Hope this helps.

Why would you scrape that away? I think it would introduce more contams, and at the same time null the double ended casing tek?

That wouldnt null the double ended casing because you put WET verm on the bottom, not the shit that was in the jar when you knocked it up
