casing method and sterlization technique
    #1552745 - 05/16/03 12:07 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

ok i have vermiculite, jiffy-mix, and2 1/2 pint casings fully colonized. i plan on using a 50/50 ratio of verm and jiff mix. Sould i sterilize the verm and jiffy mix, water mix If so whats a good method, weing that we do not have a pressure cooker, just a microwave, or oven. If not should i put a layer of verm in the container then the broken up cakes the the jiffy-mix on top?

thanks alot.

Woe, that sucks, sorry.

You don't need to sterilize it but some people do. Without those I don't know -- maybe mix some alcohol (70%) in with it and then let it completely evaporate (you can tell by smelling it,) stirring it in the process. I'm going out on a limb, though -- I've never actually tried that.

Where do you live inside a cave?

How did you make up 1/2 pint jars over a fire?

Are you saying that you do have a microwave and and oven? If so, microwave the casing mixture for 5 mins (after adding the water), stir using a sterile spoon, then microwave for another 5 mins. Let it cool to room temp, then apply the casing layer

You should buy a PC they are invaluable. You don't want to have to go borrow a friends every time you want to make some more cakes. 50$ now, endless sterilization later =).

u can boil the casing material in jars in a pot like pf cakes, BTW 50/50 casing is supposed to be 50=verm and 50=peat moss, which is what jiffy mix is, so mixing half jiffy mix and half verm would result in 75/25 casing mixture

LOL!

Good one!
