Casing Tray Depth?
    #1552484 - 05/15/03 10:03 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

i wonder what i the min depth of a casing tray?

I am thinking at least 4" deep. 1" for the bottom layer. 1" for cakes and 2" for the top casing layer?

Your casing should ideally be 1/4 the depth of your substrate (cakes).

And a bottom layer is not necessary, it doesn't hurt (unless it become contaminated), but it isn't needed.

If your substrate was going to be an inch, I'd say do a 1/4 to 1/2 inch casing layer.

Good Luck.

Too much casing, too little cake. Skikid is right.

yep. Instead of leaving an inch for a bottom casing layer, you might want to factor in half an inch or so (maybe less) for a layer of verm to absorb excess water.

Why?
Are you sure?

What excess of water?
There shouldn't be any excess of water!

if it's 4" deep, why not 3 inches of substrate, and about 3/4 inch casing layer. the bottom layer isn't really needed, imo.

always try to use more substrate than you think you'll need. one half pint cake doesn't go very far in a small (4x4 inch) tray - maybe a half inch layer at most. make lots of jars, and be generous with the white stuff. may as well.

kewl peeps thanks for the info.. I think this is where is was going wrong.. I had a little ass tupperware that was like 2" deep. So i had like 1" cake (1 cake) and 1" casing layer.

I just got two 4" tupperwares that i believe is going to do the trick. I just black taped them and i am waiting for my colonized jars to come..

PEACE OUTTY
