Making your own autoclavable bags

Anyone have any information on this?
Purchasing bags w/ a filter patch and/or self-healing injector site is costly, and the self-healing injector site isn't really necessary.

But, I was reading the Straw Log thread, and those plastic-rolls did intrigue me.

However, how would one go about putting on a filter patch, and where could I obtain a filter patch sheet (tyvek would work, I'm guessing), and where would I obtain the material for the AC bags? I already have an impulse sealer, so I could seal my own bags.

I make my own bags with Tyvek filter patch. I use polypropylene 40x20cm bags and glue Tyvek with a heat resistant glue. It works like hell!
The costs for one bag are around 5c. :grin: :grin: :grin:

If you are doing it for spawning I think you may be missing the point, otherwise forget this.
If I understand it correctly, I believe the whole idea behind the straw log (as well as Visions basket idea)  is that it doesn't need to be autoclavable or even blocked off from outside contamed air.  The whole idea is that oxygen is one of the main components which keeps things from contaminating (high CO2 is good for contams) and trying to contain a closed environment like a bag or such will actually have an adverse affect unless you are ABSOLUTELY sterile.  These teks actually call for high gas exchange and not necessarily high sterile procedures.  So, I would think you don't need bags which can withstand PC's or autoclaves.  Just a bag which holds form being stuffed hard and one in which you wouldn't mind destroying to get that high gas exchange.

I also use oven bags, but my filter is a ball of
Pollyfibre held tight in place, in the mouth of the bag, with a cable tie.
Works fine for me.

Hey Paid, that's exactly what I was thinking about doing. I have a question though. Do you put the polyfill in before sterilizing or after? I wasn't sure what temps polyfill burns at. Also, how tight do you tie it?

In the teks it says u can use the old verm, or perlite bags after cutting off the rubber seal, but i could see how that could be a hassle if your doing more than one, shit thats a bad idea...sorry.

you can PC polyfill. there is a thread, i believe it is by Una, about using short sections cut from syringes in making a pollyfill filter for spawnbags. it works just fine.

Also, tyvek heat seals just like autoclave bags do. So, you may be able to use your impulse sealer to really attach the tyvek filter well. Not sure if you can get tyvek to seal to plastic using heat, I would imagine you could, never tried it. Just know that tyvek will seal to itself by using an impulse sealer, so I would try it.

There should a copy of "3m's no shake bag tek" around somewhere. He used bags without filters, and illustrates filtering them with polyfill.

I have an old save-a-meal bag sealer that seems to work on FP bags.

How wide a strip do the expensive ones make? The one I have only does a very thin line.

When putting oven bags in a PC, does anyone know how much water to put in the PC? When I PC jars, I put in enough water to go up the jars about 1 inch.

Take a half pint and stick it in the middel of your pc. Fill pc to top of jar. Place your metal spacer on top of it. Then take your bags wraped in a towel and put them on top of the rack and pc it. It has worked good so far.

Thanks for the info Nomad. But I have one question. If you decide to do Grain 2 Grain tranfers, how do you get the grain in the food saver bags when they're sealed? Cut an edge(In a fairly sterile environment of course), put some colonized grain in real quick, and re-seal?

Would an oven bag inside a pillow case work?? ....

With the Tyvek filter patch how do you adhere the filter with glue? Sounds a little difficult and messy.
