My BULK Pastuerizer 2

With all the invaluable cultivation information I have received from these forums, I felt it was time to give back to the community. This idea of mine was expounded upon by previous teks that I seen here and am by no means taking credit for this tek. This is a straight forward idea involving minimal equipment. First you will need to find a non-working freezer from craigslist, perhaps;preferably a stand-up with shelves to hold your substrate bags. Second item needed would be a pressure cooker, which you should have if you're in this hobby! Next you will need a burner of some sort to boil the water that will be in the cooker; I use a liquid propane unit for its portability. Then you will need a temperature gauge with a long enough rod to go through your freezer for temp readings. Then you will need to afix a 3/8 connector valve to freezer for your 3/8 fuel line, which will be placed over the P.C. valve(where the rocker weight SHOULD be) then place on your connector valve. Now just fill your unit with substrate bags and crank the heat. Now you wait a few hours and VOILA, hundreds of pounds of freshly pastuerized substrate Now this can be modified to suit your needs, hope you all enjoy

Curious, does the pressure in the PC rise when you do this?

The pressure cooker wouldn't pressurize without the weight...
Hey, OP. What kind of temperatures do you get in that thing? How long do you let it go for? Freezers are meant to insulate, but honestly I'm skeptical. It looks too good to be true =P

Actually not everyone was a noob. Being a noob is a very new phenomenon. Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing". Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about. -Shpongle1

I could see it reaching a couple PSI.

Oh, you mean inside the pressure cooker?
Yeah, probably a few PSI. The tube leading from it would put a little back pressure on it.

The back pressure is negligible,I never get a reading over 1 psi. I've only got it up to about 180 degrees, thats only because I constructed the shelving supports from CPVC. Im sure I could max it out at 212F but not going to, once the temp reaches 180, I turn burner off and it'll maintain temperature long enough for effective pasteurization. I fill my AA930 with bout 5 gallons, just so I make sure it wont run dry during runs. This is simplicity at its best, especially for commercial growers!

Thanks Foo, its people like you who have given me knowledge and direction in the cultivation of our beloved fungus. After sifting through endless threads on this forum, I have finally decided to start my own business as a mushroom farmer and have peace of mind knowing I'm the creator of my own destiny;not toiling away at an under-paid & under-appreciated job, creating wealth for some other fuk! To that I say cheers!!!

Nice setup! Your description looks sufficient for someone to copy your design, but a more detailed writeup with more pics would be awesome.

Awesome setup!
I have something similar but instead of a PC providing steam I'm using 2 Wagner Power Steamers..
When the temps get to 170 inside the airspace, I begin to add screwdrivers inbetween the door and seal.. I add one thing at a time until the temp levels out.. at that point its just check it every hour and refill water as needed.
Remote grill thermometers work great for internal probes... and you can keep the Temp reader hooked to your pocket for peace of mind.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! That remote grill thermometer is a great idea, as I could stick it inside one of the bags to know when the center will hit pastuerization, good one devilstone! Freespeech-Ill try and post a few more pics for ya so you can get a generaliation of how exactly I have it set-up

buy extra probes if you can... that way you can place one in multiple bags(I use laundry bags & pillow cases).. then all you have to do is swap the probes on the transmitter to read each bag.
The multiple probes help a lot in setting your timer for the correct amount of time.. I figured each bag would heat up on a relatively even level with each other.. but after probing all 3 bags individually I found as much as a hour difference in some bags reaching temp versus others..
The grill thermometers work well in waterbath pasteurizing too, no problems with being wet..
