colonizing compost sprouting pins!!!
    #1551335 - 05/15/03 04:13 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

so, afoaf spawned a 50/50 mix of composted manure and raffia grass (wheat straw substitute)
with 3 qt jars of birdseed about ten days ago. he checked on it three days ago and it was
about 70% colonized. then, he goes to check it today and its about 90% colonized, and there
are five or six half-inch pins! he is rather new to bulk grows with manure, and this really
surprised him. Is it normal for pins to form before the substrate is fully colonized? He was
planning on casing this with 50/50+ before the first flush, but should he just try and
fruit it without casing now? Any help would be appreciated.

yes, a small amount of light has gotten through, but i didn't think it would start
forming pins unless it was fully colonized
