Drive-through employee arrested on drug charge Mandy Goodnight/The (Alexandria) Town Talk May 14, 2003
MANY ? A Big Mac and "coke" ? not a soft drink, but cocaine ? are what some customers were ordering at the drive-through window at the McDonald's in Many.
Drugs were being peddled at the drive-through window there until an undercover operation put a stop to it this week, Sabine Parish sheriff's detectives said Tuesday.
A McDonald's employee was arrested Monday after an undercover officer made a food-and-drug order at the restaurant.
Fannie Mae Spikes, 44, of Robeline faces a charge of distribution of cocaine, authorities said.
The Sabine Parish Sheriff's Office Drug Unit has been investigating Spikes for about a month.
Chief Deputy Travis Bennett said narcotics agents received tips that drugs were being sold out of the McDonald's on San Antonio Avenue. Agents had been working to catch Spikes' operation in action.
About 9 a.m. Monday, the undercover officer placed two orders at the drive-through. Afterward, agents served the restaurant with a search warrant.
The business was closed down for about an hour as officers searched the premises.
Spikes was found to have cocaine in her possession, Bennett said. He did not know how much she had, but he said it was several bags.
Spikes slipped the drug purchase in with the food order when passing it through the window to the customer, Bennett said.
Code words apparently were not used when making the purchase. The employee taking the order is the only one who hears the order, investigators said.
Spikes' drug customers knew when she worked and knew what she was selling, Bennett said. Drugs appear to have only been sold only from the drive-through and not over the counter, he said.
The arrest was part of Sheriff Guffey Lynn Pattison's "Zero Tolerance on Drugs" campaign, officials said.
Spikes was booked into the Sabine Parish Jail, where she remained Tuesday.
