it was carey ranch plume agate.

Fire opal is correct but it is not from Lightning Ridge.
This Hemisphere.

i got the location wrong.
fire opal from nevada, likely rainbow ridge.
could also be from royal rainbow or royal peacock mines.

Oh wait. You were right. I was looking for Virgin Valley Black Fire Opal. And I guess Rainbow Ridge is in the Virgin Valley.

That double facet is amazing and a very telling clue I hope.

nope, but it is a very unique and famous variety of quartz.
the double termination and clarity are strong clues.

Is it what is called a Herkimer diamond?
Searching double terminated clear quartz crystal gets way too many results with no name.
Any clues as to location?
Fuck. Too slow again.

A folk name or what they consist of along with the general area they can be found will suffice.

moqui marbles, or iron concretions
i'll also add that they come from southern utah, weathered out of the navajo sandstone formation that most people are familiar with via the arches and grand escalante staircase.
