It could be plumbed to a mains water supply to test under pressure. I would rather having a lid blow off with just mains water behind it rather 30psi of steam & water. You could also consider pumping air into it, at a gas station or with a bicycle pump. Then spray soapy water around it and look for bubbles to show the leaks.

No it would be tested with an air compressor. No water, no heat. Out in the forest connected to my compressor, I will use the reg on the compressor the bring the pressure to 30 psi.

And i will be using soapy water to test for leaks, I have the real leak check soapy water, Im a licensed Gas tech.

originally upon seeing this post i thought "bad idea" but looks good so far, have u ever consider going to a scrap yard and re-proposeing something? i have see plently of things at the yard that might work ( some are a tad big to carry and/or place on a stove, but youd only have to pay the melt weight.

I'm not concerned about cost with scrap yards as I have all the steel needed now for the build. If I was ever to upsize that would be my first top.

As for cutting 3/8" steel it'll take me a while... I got maybe 5" around on a fresh cutting wheel or 20P of the way around. Ill get er dunn tho.
While I'm at the shop I'm gonna grab a couple gas fitttings fo I can mount my reliefs and gauges.

I jut cant sit still lmfao, Im always up and about doing something...

My gf is starting to get mad at me for it... :awenuhuh:

But I do what I do  I just found another grinding wheel and burnt that one up to. Im now half way around the lid, Now i just gotta brain storm so I dont fuck up the next step, mounting the bolts to the tank and finding some hardened steel 1/2" maybe 5/8" bolts. I dont know if I want to solid mount the bolts to the tank, Or if I want to use a bushing, Or small gas nipple to allow some play in the bolts. Im leaning to solid, But i wanna make sure I have the clearance to put the holes that close to where the seal will be.

Im also gonna experiment on what would be the best possible way to make a perfectly even "bead" of RTV. I mean PERFECT. lol Im not smearing the shit all over and calling it a day, Im gona kinda tape off the edge and apply the RTV, then removing the tape, Somewhat like a painter. But i need it so be slightly thick so it can withstand some wear and tear.

Maybe Ill make a kind of mold (Not the green type ) to fit the end of a large tube of RTV that would spread a perfect square bead every time, Kind of like how curbs on the road are made. Gimme your thoughts This is something I havent had much of a chance to think about. And i dont have the skills nor tools to make a "metal to metal" seal, Not happening... :frown: I could use a tube from a bike tire, But i want something better then that..

Now I need some fucking grinder wheels! Who has fome 4" grinder wheels that'll ship for sporeprints! Im joking..

looks goos bro, wish I had them welding skills.
I have a question though, why didnt you just cut the top of and use it as a cover?

because there would be no way to mount it, or make a good enough seal.
with it this way (Upside down) the top handle now becomes a stand that I could place a burner under, And the bottom lip of the tank becomes an effective seal and because of the sides of the lip it gives me somewhere to weld the mounts.(bolts.)

I wouldn't worry about making the rtv too thick, if you do, it might blow out:shrug: seems like the best way to get a perfect seal is gonna be squeeze an even large bead around the rim, wait 5 minutes and set the lid on and make it even. Then when it dries, and you tighten the bolts, it will pull it down

Oh im only gonna make it like a 1/16" thick if that. I just want it to look good lol.I will be filling the inside edge of the lip with RTV all the way to the opening of the PC because I effectively welded the water drainage holes shut. So I dont want water settling in there.

I suggest getting a set of 10" iron pipe flanges from you local iron yard.  Then, weld one piece to your tank, and the other end can just have a steel plate cut to fit it with a gasket.

This makes your seal metal to metal and easy to repeatedly remove.  They usually come with 5/8" hex nuts, but you can buy or make wing nuts so you can remove them by hand.

For this one I'm just gonna use what I have I can still use a gasket with the smaller tank as the edge of the bottom is rounded not a piece of flat stock like the larger tank. For the future I'm planning on building a horizontal autoclave (don't ask me why) and nice flat solid flange would be better suited for for that build, although I would like a hinged door if I found the right parts. Any ideas on that?
