Is it so hard.....?
    #1548605 - 05/14/03 03:38 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Is thinking for yourself all that difficult?

If not, then why is there so much resistance?

I think its because of the compunctions from being selfish.

We hear everyone say that being selfish is bad, when it is the only true thing we can do.

And once we achive to do it withought feeling bad about it, we start loving ourself, and thus everyone.

What do you call "thinking for yourself"?

I doubt whether any of us ever have an original thought in our entire lives. Perhaps guys like Einstein have flashes of original thought - but for most of the time I doubt they actually "think for themselves" either.

"thinking for yourself"

what does that mean??? it seems a bit pompous and sophmoric, no offense.

what you have to realize is that humans are subject to circumstance, and once a person becomes comfortable with a circumstance, their is no need to strive for intellectual ability.

if "thinking for yourself" is related to politics and philosophy, well....for the most part, both are redundant.

if you arent going to change your political environment, then why give a fuck?

and debating philosophy......well....thats just entertainment anyways, so why not play basketball?

We were born, in Nature. Everything within Nature is led by Nature. The masses are born into ignorance, (which is within Nature), which is trapped by instincts, such as greed, violence; survival-thinking. But as the overall population of the planet increases, so does the percentage of people who are breaking out of Nature's patterns, who are defying, or perhaps becoming God itself.

We are now starting to go beyond Nature, into something completely different. Thinking for yourself means creating your own reality, and when more and more people realize this and start to program their own worlds, well, we will be in an undescribable state as a species.

Myself, I'm leaning towards merging with a Sun. When crazy shit starts happening, I will be safe as One.

We are taught from a very early age, at least in the US, to not think for ourselves. We are told where to sit, when to eat, what to study, when to study, when to nap, when to wake, when to go to bed, when to watch cartoons, what to eat, when to eat, how to eat, what to wear, what to think, etc... when a person has been taught to be a lamb since age five, it is difficult to break away.

As we get older, the media takes over for the school system. They decide what is important, what we should focus on, what we should believe, what we should know, how we should feel about things, what is right, what is wrong, who to vote into office, how to live our lives, etc. Before the media was so established, this job was done by the church.

A damn fine answer if you ask me.

As to your original question, we...are...lazy.

I don't think any of us has very many truly original thoughts. The way we think is largely decided by genetics, up-bringing, social circles, the media, and our education. So yes, it is pretty hard to have a truly original thought.

What is an original thought?

that is a good question.
I guess an original thought is a thought that has never been thought before.
every thought was original at some point. I think...

is it that hard to have an original thought? I think it happens everyday. just random things floating in my head. they may not be particularly useful thoughts... but they are original.

you sound as if you think that the question you pose is original... but its not. neither is your self-righteousness. people don't think because they are afraid of people like you telling them that they aren't "thinking for themselves", so they latch onto what someone else says-- thinking that this will protect them from the assholes in the world, i.e. Sclorch. The way to get people to think for themselves is to let them be themselves - - you can insert a helpful hint here and there, but saying "jesus, think you ignoramus! what's your problem?!?" is just being mean, even if your perception is more accurate. The reason perception becomes more accurate is experience. so just wait, and don't make the problem worse, and people will eventually think more rationally-- the same way it works for everyone - - experience.

According to the Micro$oft end user license agreement (EULA) there are no more original thoughts. Anything that you can think of has already been thought of by Micro$oft and is their property.
