a thin layer of vermiculite helps to absorb excess water.

You don't need one.

And don't just use peat!

Yes, thin is ok. You want vermiculite on the bottom, not peat. Better to put nothing than peat.

If you are just using peat and lime it can be a bit tricky, but it works really well if you do it right. Tell me if you need more details.

so peat is good 4 the top, not the bottom.  it probably gets flattened if you put it on the bottom, and becomes counter-productive.

I would think it would contaminate -- peat contaminates very easily.

Yeah. You should basically view the bottom layer of a casing for water absorbtion, unless you are trying to do a double ended fruiting TEK or something weird like that. Just leave it out if you only have peat, you'll be all set.

My friend used only peat semi pasturized on his quart jar WBS casing...and its pinning very well, although the pins are developing very slowly. I just wanted to chime in and say that it should work...make sure you buffer the PH with lime, or eggshells or something...she didnt, and thinks that may be slowing her down.

NO....that casing layer on the bottom hides contams very well.

Although good for moisture retention...it is not needed.

Dont go that route.

Crumble your jars and use a casing layer.
You may get that extra 1-2 flushes you are looking for, before the green mean hits.

Trust me:)
