Oh... The lids have to be on upside down?

I have ball 1/2 pint 2 piece jar lids, and I was just reading over the PF Tek, and I noticed that it said to have the rubber sealing edge UP. I put mine on so the rubber was against the glass. Bad idea? What is going to happen? What is the reason for this?

I just keep them on normal. Upside down is supposed to increase airflow. If you have holes in them for innoc's, though, and no tape they should be ok; you can always invert them if they stall.

I'm planning on inverting them anyway. I was hoping that putting the lid on this way would not stop me from getting it off. Yea, and I'm going to put a coffee filter w/ rubber band over the holes after the jars get a little more colonized. Eq's seem to colonize fairly quickly compared to T3. Look at my 1 EQ jar that I innoculated 4 days ago: PS: this jar was innoculated with the end of my EQ syringe, which was about 6 CCs.

Jar looks good. I believe the original reason for inverting the lids was to stop the rubber seal from sticking to the glass edge. Then it almost became part of the PF Tek ritual to turn the lids upside down, and it was just simply "done that way". It should not cause you any significant problem.

It sucks I have to wait weeks if not months for my shrooms to grow. I think I'm going to have to go buy a quarter this weekend...

The reason you would want the lid on upside down is so the jar doesnt seal when the rubber melts (ANY normal canning jar with metal lids have these) in the PC (this happens even when just boiling. It does seem to help with air flow a bunch as well though.
Dunk: got to learn to wait ;-) I've got two jars at 50% and waiting is the hard part for me, i always want to go check them every 15th or 20th breath i take.lol

photovorix, so if the lids are sealed, are they going to be extremely hard to get off? Can't I just pry the damn thing off if I have too?

It'd be the same as opening a jar of jam that was put in a canning jar and sealed. I'm pretty sure its an ease-of-use issue, but there is some air exchange functionality as well. I turn my jars upside down with the lid loose every few days which would be in-effective if the disc was sealed to the top of the jar.
Maybe someone else knows another reason the lids should be upside down.

When I had the lids on facing down, before I used them at all, after a week or so of being like that, they were stuck on, not tight, but you had to push more than normal to get them off. Never said they would be stuck if you had them down. They will come off for sure, but its easier to have them upside down, esp if you want to loosen the lid for air flow. If its sealed, the ring is the only part that'll move.

I use them rubber seal to glass and I never have any problems loosening the lids for better air exchange. I just loosen and hit them against my hand to make the cake slide down.
