Bail denied over drug haul charge May 12, 2003
A MAN charged over South Australia's largest haul of dried cannabis has been refused bail in an Adelaide court.
Anthony Grant Hobbs, 42, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today charged with the possession and production of cannabis and the possession of an unlawful amount of cash.
The charges related to $10 million worth of cannabis found yesterday at a property at Two Wells, north of Adelaide.
Police today told the court they had discovered 1080kg of dried cannabis inside the Two Wells house and another 10 small plants growing under hydroponics.
They also found $1305 in a wallet under a truck on the property and $800 in the house.
A replica handgun, a shotgun, two safes and sophisticated irrigation and surveillance equipment were also found on the property.
The previous record seizure of dried cannabis by SA police was 317kg last year.
Applying for bail today, Ross Colthorpe, for Hobbs, questioned the amount of drugs found.
"The weight of the cannabis is less than in the allegations, the street value is significantly less than the allegations," Mr Colthorpe said.
Mr Colthorpe said Hobbs could provide two guarantors for bail, including one that would provide up to $5000 cash.
But refusing bail, Magistrate Stefan Metanomski said Hobbs was charged with serious offences.
"(If found guilty) there's every likelihood he may be imprisoned, thereby providing him with good incentive not to keep his bail," Magistrate Metanomski said.
Hobbs will appear in court again next month.

-------------------- One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.
