Pan Cyans in GA
    #1547606 - 05/14/03 08:01 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

After the rains this week I decided to see what I could find around the neighborhood. I found several nonactives, but as I was walking back up my driveway I spotted several small mushrooms in the pinestraw underneath a tree (I haven't figured out what kind yet, but it is similar to an ash or box elder). The soil is red clay. The mushrooms had thin hollow stems, brown gills and a offwhite/tan cap that seemed to blue at the edges. I couldn't believe it, so I went up and threw a couple of these babies on a plate. The prints sure did look purple to me, but since I thought pan cyans only grew on dung I couldn't figure out what the hell they were (I don't have a camera or I would have shown you guys) I threw them into the backyard to spread the spores and kind of forgot about them. Well, this morning I looked back where I picked these and there was a solitary mushroom, old and drying out. The cap had taken on a much more overall golden color.I picked it up and smelled it. Holy shit! It smells just like the dried mushrooms I am used to seeing. I went back and did a little more looking, and now I'm 75% sure these are pan cyans, and not 10 feet from where I park every day.

I will find a camera and wait for the next rains to come, but meanwhile I thought you guys would be happy to hear another report of mushrooms popping their heads up.

good thing you are 75% sure they are Cyans, Because I don't think they are. But then again I could be wrong, but the area you found them in is just the wrong habitat all together for Cyans. I was thinking you maybe found Antillarum if Anything but thats not really where thet grow either.

Atlanta. I've been waffling on these since I found them a few days ago, actually. I checked the ground where they grew and it looks like there is a pretty deep layer 4-6" of organic matter underneath the pine straw before you get to clay. They don't have the almost semi-circular look I see in antillarums, I guess we'll find out when I can get some pics up, it is raining a little right now. Do antillariums have that same sweet musky smell when they dry?

Probably just wishful thinking then. There have been several posts recently that have mentioned smell as an indicator, which lead me back to thinking these might be active. I am curious to find out what they are though, so I'm still going to post some pics when I can. Thank you guys, with any luck I'll halfway know what I'm doing by the end of the season.

Like I said, I don't have a camera. I don't know what you could tell from this specimen anyway, it is pretty dried and beat up. When they pop up again I will borrow a digital camera and get a shot or two of what I am talking about though.

Copelandia cyanescens have black gills not brown.

SO they are not what you say they are.

I'm about 99% sure they're *not* Pan cyans for several reasons.

1. They grow strictly from dung or well manured fields.

2. You're too far north. Copelandia/Panaeolus cyans would be a rare find north of Valdosta, GA.

3. Like MJ said, Pan cyans have black gills.

4. They also have black spore prints.

5. Almost all mushrooms smell the same when dried.

6. The color on all Panaeolus caps will fade after they've been exposed to the sun for too long, giving them a glazed white to tan color.

My guess is that you've got some other species of Panaeolus... Hard to say without a picture.

Thanks for all the help. I was actually looking for weiliis (of course). Most of the neighborhoods are probably too old in the more urban areas of town but my schedule's too busy to really go hunting outside of the city for a few weeks. Hopefully I can catch the tail end of the spring weilii season then enjoy the cubes for a while.
