my theoretic "free" (perpetual) energy experiment.
    #15473067 - 12/06/11 02:44 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

It basically goes like this;

lift something when the moon is overhead, then drop it when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth.

moon overhead should reduce the force required to lift the object

moon below should impart more force when the object is dropped.

basically, the tides.

now debunk!

if you can!

Its not really a perpetual energy device per the standard definition, becuase all that's doing is sapping energy from the orbiting bodies.  Eventually the process would simply end with the moon crashing into the earth and that would be the end of that- a long time, but not perpetual, and not 'free'.

Aaah that was exactly the comment i was going to make

What do you think about such a thing being utilised for "fuel"

harvesting extra terrestrial kinetic energy through gravity in some sort of manner?

i cant think of a practical way to do it besides tidal energy, but the concept intrigues me.

Would it?  Or would it fly off into space?  The effect of tides causes drag on the moon, which slows it down, which pushes its orbit farther from the earth.

My first thought is when the mass is raised and closer, the moon will feel a larger force but as the moon orbits along it will feel that force behind it and it will slow down.

congrats on discovering tidal energy.

What if the Earth cools down, hypothetically, such that the oceans freeze.  Would the Moon then eventually be pulled into the Earth?

Off topic:  Which is believed to happen first, the Sun consuming Earth or the Earth cooling down significantly at the core?

Well, I feel kind of foolish now.  It just came to me - this is wrong.  If you raise the mass, you of course push the earth back such that the systems center of mass stays the same.  The moon would feel no difference at all.  Freshman physics fail...

Does that then make it perpetual?
