Oh yeah, and doesn't vanilla need to be sweetened with sugar to taste good at all. Mint is cool, but have you ever tasted plain vanilla extract. Yuk.

Think of the possibilites, they have orange extract, coconut extract, rum extract, strawberry extract, and so on. Ooo orange shrooms!

Yeah, but all those extracts require sweetness for goodness. If you don't believe me, taste the extract with your finger. Yuk. Mint is the only one that seems like it would work. Though, what the hell, it's worth a try.

I'm pretty sure that the shrooms I'm eating taste bad because shrooms taste like crap. Everyone I've ever tripped with has done the same thing the instant they put the shrooms in thier mouths, cringe from the taste and make all sorts of sour faces.
Yeah sure, I can stand the taste of shrooms enough to chew the same 3g for hours at a time and once I start tripping I'll tell people that I like the taste, but guess what, I'm lying.

I'm not saying that someone out there doesn't just love the hell out of some shroom taste, but I'm not going to be going around trying to taste thier goodness.

Anyone know if mushrooms contain any phenylthiocarbamide?

That's the same stuff in PTC filter paper (you might remember from high school - some people can taste it [VERY bitter and nasty, like chewing an aspirin], and some people just taste nothing.)

If they do, it could be a genetic thing - some people taste 'em and some don't.

i like when i was told by a bunch of 15 year olds that i "obviously never ate shrooms before" because i didn't think they taste like shit

and then they told me that they taste like shit because they grow on shit
and i said you can grow shrooms on something other then shit

and they told me i was wrong

then i stopped talking because i realized i was in a blink 182 chatroom

haha... silly kids
and stupid me for being in that room to begin with

Peppermint can be poisonous and deadly if too much is taken, my grandfather worked in a peppermint field and I remember him telling me this as I was a kid. Suppose the shrooms concentrated the menthol? I really dont think it would be a problem but you might be careful how much you add to the substrate. Here is a link to a little safety, but the actual LD50 for peppermint is not listed. You could find it with a search but all I saw was for animals.

Regardless I think I will try some sort of essential oil like peppermint or another mint. Something that has a fragrant aroma would be more effective I would think. I really dont like the taste of shrooms that well, and have been either rolling up partially dry ones into little balls and swallowing them, or encapsulating them.

Sounds like experiment time, wonder if I can get wintergreen flavoring?

I didn't mean this to turn into a debate over the taste of your shrooms. Again, I did it just to see if I can.

Taste is always relative. Some people like brocolli. Others hate it. Some people like the taste of beer. Others do not.

Also, don't expect a drastic change in flavor. Like I said in my origianal post, adding a teaspoon of peppermint extract to your substrate will only add a delicate peppermint flavor. Don't expect them to taste like breath fresheners.

You could also experiment with the amounts.
