So much water pooling!!!
    #15470959 - 12/05/11 06:38 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i have 5 monotubs and all are great , but the 4 still consolidating have pools of water all over the sub and down sides . any advice?

PS.this was the same with the one now fruiting, but when i opened her up i dabbed some up with sterile towelettes? All substrate was squeezed to field capacity and pasteurized. HOW TO FIX THIS?

Use less water in your sub next time.

well your tub with the same problem is now fruiting and all you did was dab up the moisture? sounds like you have the fix sorted and tested already!

Ok I'll try less water in the sub next time even though it seemed a little dry before pasteurization. Also i would like to fix this problem instead of letting it pool and dabbing after opening

Tip it to the side and let it drain to the bottom, or dab it with a clean paper towel

I tried to respond to this thread yesterday but the server was down again and I got a 404 server error.

It sounds like you're improperly incubating the substrate instead of using normal room temperature.  If there wasn't condensation before but now there is, that's the most likely cause.  I'd suspect condensation due to temperature differential.

Driver, not only is that water obviously due to condensation as RR said, but if your tub is already fully colonized this pooling water can be a good thing.  This excess water will be sucked up by the mycelium and help to provide a killer first flush.  I sometimes intentionally pour a little extra water down the sides of my tubs for this very purpose.  Don't let the water come up to more than half the height of the substrate (any more and the sub will float), but don't underestimate the benefit that this pooling condensation can provide.

***To be clear, you don't want pooling condensation if your tub is not fully colonized.  If the substrate gets too wet too early, it won't colonize.  Some people combat this by adding an interior plastic bag, bent inwards, so this excess water falls behind the bag, avoiding the substrate completely.  (Although now the noobs think the trash bag serves other purposes which it really doesn't).  But if you're using a high enough spawn ratio like 1:2 or 1:3, your tub should colonize before the condensation starts pooling at the bottom.  And once it does, this extra water will actually help your grow.  Czech it out!

I disagree with above poster. Pooling water is undesirable, even if your monotub is colonized. I've misted heavily in the past once a pinset was already in place, but pouring extra water down the sides of the tub...that just sounds like a bad idea. I'm not a big fan of excessive/stagnant water in my tubs. Think about it.

This makes me think you haven't been growing very long. Lining your tub with a bag not only assists in pooling, but also effectively prevent sides pinning, or greatly reduces it. You should be a little more careful handing out your flavor of "advice".

I also wish you would post us some pics Driver

This mono had the same problem but once introduced to a nice FAE it cleared up. BUT  i still find it undesirable to have pools of water all over ur sub (contam possibility)

Both of these tubs are still consolidating. they dont look too wet but trust me they were, they have been cleaned up with sterile towelettes:thumbup: If u look closely u can see in the second pic where the water was pooling.I just dont enjoy opening these tubs nor sucking up access water!!

hey driver, just fyi, I was talking about allowing excess condensation to pool at the bottom of a fully colonized tub, not pooling on the surface.  That most likely dripped down off the lid.  And yeah, just as you already did you can gently dab it up with a paper towel if it's really pooling, but some moisture on the surface is to be expected.  As you noted, FAE takes care of it.

And since you're using opaque tubs, it's impossible to see what's happening on the bottom, so hopefully it didn't get soaked before it colonized.  Anyway the tubs look good.  Well done.

will mycelium stop growing on uncolonized substrate if fruiting conditions are introduced?  never thought about that?  if so, it might be a problem if the bottom got wet, and when Fae was introduced it evaped leaving drier sub which wont colonize?

No, it will colonize. I've put tubs into fruiting only to discover a corner was left uncolonized because of pooling water. As soon as I dabbed up the excess water, the next day the myc was already starting to take it over. It's pretty hard to stop myc once you get him started, just as long as you aren't drowning him! :P
