What to do with cobweb? Remove the casing layer?
    #1526712 - 05/07/03 01:48 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Hi all! 1 week ago I put 2 trays with 0.5 kg of colonized rye each and a casing layer 50% peat/50% verm in the fruiting chamber. They were perfect, with a good mushroom smell and nothing strange.

2 days ago I could see a very soft mycelium, like a spider web growing over the casing layer.

What can I do with this? I would like to save the trays.

Is it possible to scrap the casing layer and to put a new one? I think, if the cobweb hasn't penetrated into the rye, just removing the casing layer should save it.

Thank you!

Applying a new casing layer is a good idea.
Spray some h2o2:h2o solution for couple of days after changing the casing layer.

Btw, make sure it's really cobweb. Cobweb mold grows very fast and wispy,  where mycelium grows more slowly and stronger. No hagas ningun error !

Del otro lado de la frontera ,

It's sure cobweb.

I'm worried, because I don't know if the rye which is under the casing layer is infected. How could I know that?

Or cobweb only affects the casing layer?
Thank you!

Scraping the layer will let you know that. Also apply the h2o2:h2o solution on the mycelium after taking out the infected layer and before applying the new one.

When using casings, cobweb normally strarts to spread on top of the casing layer, making its way through the inner portion of the layer and then afecting the mycelium. That's why you have to treat it fast before it spreads or else replace the layer.

Shiiiiiit! I have seen the trays now, and there are many pins, among the cobweb. Is that posible?

Should I kill these babies removing the casing layer?

If I spray the surface of the casing with h2o2+h2o, will the pins die?

Some will probably abort but if you don't want to remove the casing layer that's your only solution.

Solved! (for the moment)

Yesterday, I removed the upper peat/verm, including the pins. I didn't add more, because ran out of it, so the remaining casing layer was a bit thin. I sprayed the h2o+h2o2, only 3 splashes for each tray.

The big rubbermaid where the trays are has been open during the night (for ventilation)

Today there are many pins!!!!

Thank you MAIA!!! You have saved 1 kg. of rye of going to the bin.

Do pins abort when they get misted with h2o2/h2o? That could explain ALOT of things that have been happenined to me recently. I had a bitch of a time getting pins.
