BRF= small fruits?
    #1545369 - 05/13/03 02:05 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

my latest creeper casings used with brf cakes and cased with coir/verm yeiled some EXTREMELY tiny fruits...the tallest was no bigger than 3 or 4 inches, and when they dried they are like the size of needles...it cant be the strain because creepers are supposed to be good fruiters

does a thin casing layer have anything to do with this? i also only used 1 cake for each casing and the casing itself was prolly no thicker than 1/4 inch and thinner in some parts

my friend recently cased with a very very thin layer of verm on top...should have been more ...and he got one shroom that was 3/4 of an ounce wet and about 9 inches long.

i have only grown brf with verm and now i am doing a 5050 of creeper.. I have noticed that the casing thickness does have a little to do with it. I once had a casing in a tupperware container which was about 4" deep. I am now using a 2" deep container and my fruits are not as big as the one cake 4" deep casing..

just some thoughts for ya..

ya rob, you have to clarify a little more-casing layer is non nutritive on top, substrate is all underneath. and as to liftdehoff's small fruits, the thinner that your substrate layer will mean more surface area and more mushrooms at a smaller size, if you go deeper you will be gettin better use out of your casing.
Jake
P.S.-the casing 'layer' should be just enough to cover the sub if its only 2" deep, other wise you can go up to 1" layer for deep substrates.

The more substrate=the more nutrients=the larger the shrooms. Brown rice flour is thought to be one of the least potent substrates you can use.

I don't know where you got this information, but it is false. Mushroom's potency depends on the amount of nutrients available to the mushroom, especially tryptamine, and brf is very low in this area. Larger substrates like straw and dung tend to produce more potent fruits due to the larger amount of nutrients available. Also, bulk substrates like straw and dung produce larger fruits not only because of having more nutrients, but becuase more is usually used. This will carry over to brf to some degree. If you use more brf, you will produce larger fruits.

I was wondering about that, the whole post totally confused me since i thought i knew that grain and bulk produced more quanity and quality fruits. From what i've read BRF is an easy substrate to work with but not really a top choice in potency or size.

I have read in a couple threads that when using grain and bulk substrates, the fruits tend to be larger in size and "healthier" looking, however despite their size they are only about as potent, or slightly less potent (by weight)than those grown on BRF.

I can't speak from experience in this area, but i have heard it more than once, that the BRF fruits are indeed slightly more potent. Perhaps its PF propoganda, i dunno, but i will try to dig up the threads for you..

anyone else know anythig about it?

WHEN I STARTED LEARNING ABOUT THIS GREAT HOBBY THATS WHAT I READ ALSO, THAT USING BRF YOU GET POTENT FRUITS. AFTER A FOAF GREW SOME OF HIS OWN HE HAS DETERMINED THAT IF GIVEN THE RIGHT GROWING CONDITIONS BRF FRUITS CAN GET LARGE AND PRETTY POTENT.... I MEAN JUST LOOK AT THE TWINS (4TH FLUSH BRF MAZATAPEC) AND THEY'VE BEEN GIVING ME INCREDIBLE VISUALS.

Thickness of substrate layer seems quite directly connected to size of fruiting bodies, but there seems to also be a fair bit of randomness involved. My pet rat just finished his second BRF PF-Cake casing. The first case yielded about 200 wet grams on its first flush from 3 BRF cakes, but his second yielded almost 300 wet grams from its first flush on 3.5 1/2 pint BRF cakes. The cases were identical in size and casing layer thickness, btw. The largest mushie on casing #1 was about 12 grams, the largest mushie on casing #2 was 94 grams! Conditions were pretty much identical for both casings; just goes to show you that a good deal of randomness is involved.
