Should this casing be tossed?
    #1540466 - 05/11/03 11:51 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

OK, my friend has a casing..It's going on its second flush. The pins are already up.

he looked it over just recently and saw a small blue green area in the verm. he thought it may have been the bluing left over from where he picked a shroom off from the first flush.

Upon further digging he found that a decent sized portion of the mycellium was contaminated with blue green mold. He scooped it all out and patched the giant hole int he center of the casing with more verm.

Should the casing be tossed? Can the mushrooms that are starting to grow become poisonous from the mold in the mycelium, or do they not work like that?

isolate casing and wait to see if the contam spreads. if it does your up shits creek.
did you spray contam area with water& peroxide? sometimes that helps stop the spread. if not you will get your answer in a day or two.
good luck

well theres only one casing so its already isolated.

the contam area was sprayed with pure peroxide befre he just patched the big hole with verm.

but anyway, main worry is...Can the shrooms absorb the contams fromt he mecelial network, and grow up to me contaminated poisonous shrooms?

Toxic molds are rare and usually black but they can be blue-green. When in doubt... throw it out. Peroxide does nothing but encourage molds so it may be a lost cause anyhow.

bump..

Someone said that it's impossible for a shroom to grow as a contaminated shroom, and it just won;t grow at all. Just looking for a definate answer.

Interesting. And all this time my friend has been using it to control contams.  :smirk:

Why do you say this?

Its simple...and hard....there is no way that you can find out that the contam has been absorbed by the mycelial network or not untill you eat them and fall really sick....just be careful and THROW IT AWAY also dont EAT ANY shrooms of that casing

cmon think about it you can grow shit loads of shrooms but growing your digestive system back may not be that easy.....or play russian roulette..with yourself...and eat them

Seems like a lot of folks in this thread are saying...........one bad apple on the tree, poisons every apple on it.

WRONG.

Any individual shroom is either healthy or not. If not, it is obvioius as funky rot.

They all grow from a myc network. If a small part of that network is infected with something, commercial cultivators treat the spot, cover it with salt & harvest all the healthy shrooms available. They don't trash can the entire substrate, unless the entire thing is infected. What does that tell you? It tells me shrooms do not generally absorb contam's.

As for hydrogen peroxide, it works in general circumstance, under certain conditions. To little to late of anything, will not resolve a problem.

Caught soon enough, hydrogen peroxide works.

Peroxide only kills organisms that do not produce the enzyme catalyse and this includes most bacteria. Shrooms produce catalyse which makes makes them immune to low levels of peroxide and the green molds produce huge amounts of catalyse and it permeates their environment. Catalyse breaks peroxide down into water and oxygen. When you add peroxide to a contaminated substrate, you can see the oxygen bubbles that form as the peroxide is destroyed. Molds thrive on substrates that are too wet and adding peroxide does nothing but contribute to the moisture problen.
