Is this internet a psychedelic?
    #1544453 - 05/13/03 07:04 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Every time I go on the internet I feel as if my mind has been expanded... It's amazing how much information there is on the web. Just think about where you would be without this message board for instance... Imagine what will be available in a few hundred years! It's almost like our minds are expanding just as the universe is with each generation. Could it be somehow connected? For instance they say the big bang started out slow and is gaining speed as it is expanding so are our minds doing the same from the begining of time? Just think about the last 1000 years of the human race compared to the other thousands... Everything is growing expodentially!

Wasn't it Humphrey Osmond who coined the term "psychedelic", meaning "mind-manifesting" originally? The internet is certainly mind-manifesting in a collective way. I already consider Google to be part of my mind and my memory, so it certainly has expanded my perceptions. But my consciousness still seems to stay firmly inside my head... I still need drugs to change that

"Of, characterized by, or generating hallucinations, distortions of perception, altered states of awareness, and occasionally states resembling psychosis."

That could sum up the effects of the internet on some people!

hehehe

The only reason our minda re "expanding" is because of all this availale information. If you took some folks from 15th century china and bought them here they could hold all this info in their brains too

lol yeah.. some of the internet is certainly psychedelic.

As for the net itself being a psychedelic, I think it all depends on how you use it - if you use it to "expand your mind" heh then hell yeah its the most long-lasting, and most used man-made psychedelic yet

well, could the internet exist without computers? no i do not think so. at least we wouldnt be conscious of it being around(and it wouldnt affect us like it does). therefore computers are the catalyst for which we can easily access this other world that is the internet. and in a purely physical way computers are nothing more than atoms of plastic and metal and silicon which together are chips and bytes and what have you. furthermore, perhaps what we cannot understand is that the internet is housed in computers. that is their home. um i think i lost myself here, sorry. ultimately what im trying to say is that the internet is a drug, probably psychedelic, for our computers. hope i made some sense there.

hehe lol so the internet expands our computers' minds? heh kind of a cool idea

I thought this was very interesting:
"could the internet exist without computers? no i do not think so. at least we wouldnt be conscious of it being around(and it wouldnt affect us like it does)."

Hmm maybe we're an internet... ;P I'll leave that alone in this topic though.

Sounds a lot like the theory of the collective unconcious or "universal mind". I've always really dug this theory, and it seems to open a lot of interesting concepts. I think I'll have to stop short on this one too however, otherwise I'll get into one of my long philosophical rants.. and no one wants that....

I see your point, computers are just plastic and metal, but it can convey thoughts and images around the world. Its all just a man-made dimension.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

I dunno.....  I'd be real upset if I woke up and realized that we were all "one" .....

I like being unique... an independant individual........ me.

I can accept that perhaps, on the "other side" we share ideas... much like dialigue happens here, but to think we are one and the same....  I refuse to accept that.

Why not start a new thread on the issue... might be interesting.

that's what's cool about this type of idea being on this scale - you ARE an individual.. and individual PART/ORGAN of the "Whole Thing."

That totally reminded me of my last mushroom trip! I had Intense visuals of giant organs thumping and breathing to the beat of the music. Very beautiful 'artistic' visuals that were astonishing.
