The Weak-minded... whatever that means
    #1544213 - 05/13/03 04:40 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

*spawned from the advertising thread*

Is it right to prey on the weak-minded?
I don't think it is.

However, we have to define what we mean by weak-minded.
Where do we draw the line for what we consider mentally deficient?

When you can't say, "NO".

My retarded uncle can say "no"... but many classify him as mentally deficient.

I don't know... I'm not "them".

But he can't do basic mathematics or use a personal computer... things I would expect from a mentally sufficient person of 50+ years.

I have a poster (in storage, or I would scan and post it) that is an advertisement for a toothpaste that they made back in the early 1900's. The toothpaste had a radioactive element added to it and was popular because it made your theeth shine nice and bright. People were unaware of the dangers of radiation at the time.

Is being ignorant week minded?

My point here is that the phrase 'week minded' is too open to interpretation to be of any real use when defining something else... smart people can be week minded as can insane people, old people, young people, drug addicts, and even the pope himself. We can be week minded one minute about one topic and a stubborn mule the next moment about another topic. What I do because I enjoy, somebody else might say I do because I am week minded.

Yeah, ?weak-minded? is ambiguous and pejorative- it implies laziness or not enough ?force of will,? an oversimplification.

I think the analysis should begin by an acknowledgement of the fact that we are all victims and beneficiaries of conditions that are and were completely out of our control. Try to deny this. Included among these factors are caregivers who encourage critical thought, a physically safe and secure environment, the innate hardware to perform complex calculations, and many others that are conducive to develop critical thinking skills. Further, those who can critically think still have their blind spots. Everyone gets depressed or anxious every once and a while- during such times we are especially susceptible to fallacious appeals to emotion or promises of what we want. Even on a normal day, certain emotional adds can elicit our underlying attitudes, encouraging us to bypass reason. We have all been victims of straight fallacious reasoning.

I think to define a special population that should not be preyed upon by an advertising industry that does what ever it has to to sell its product would be too much work, and simply put a band-aid on an underlying problem. It would be much easier to do away with these deceptive advertising tactics altogether.

Advertising is ultimately about informing people about a choice they can make, a choice that they were not previously aware of. Because if they were already aware of that choice, advertising it would just be a waste of resources.

Good advertising is when this is done in an efficient way. Bad advertising is when it is done in a way that just makes you irritated, or when it uses lies or disinformation to misrepresent the competition, or when it purposely tries to influence people by manipulating them when they are weak and vulnerable.

People who prey on the weak and vulnerable should be removed from society until they learn to behave.

I suppose it's true then...

You get beat up enough and you become strong (or you've always been strong)... and then you shouldn't and don't feel sorry for the weak, right?

Hmm... doesn't float my boat...

Perhaps, but I don't think anyone here has suggested beating up people.

Caveat emptor.

Anything more is an attempt to negate personal responsibility and making things "overly complex".

I noticed you didn't attempt to answer my question in the other thread. I was disappointed there.

Cheers,

Well you appear to have a busy schedule so I try to keep the discussion efficient and get to the heart of the matter- See "Objectivism: What a load of..."
